Steamboat Tops 300-Inch Snow Mark
Summit Base Surpasses 100-Inch Milestone
Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® Heads Toward Four-Wire Winter
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-March 12, 2014-Steamboat’s 2013/2014 season cumulative snowfall passed the 300-inch mark at mid-mountain this week due to a series of storms that have blanketed the resort with a foot of Champagne Powder® snow in the past seven days. In addition, the summit base surpassed the 100-inch milestone this morning, recording a 102-inch base.
“It’s been a snowy season so far and with the recent snow, Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® is one of only three resorts in Colorado with a summit base over 100 inches,” said Chris Diamond, president & chief operating officer for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “With more than 25.5 feet this season, Steamboat is definitely showing why it is the home of Champagne Powder snow and the place to be for skiing and riding as we head into spring.”
Steamboat is in a storm cycle that as of 5am yielded 4 inches at mid-mountain and 8 inches at the summit in the past 24-hours; 7 inches at mid-mountain and 9 at the summit in the past 48-hours; and 20 inches at mid-mountain and 28 inches at the summit for March. The resort is reporting a 75-inch base at mid-mountain and 102-inch base at the summit on powder conditions.
Steamboat has seen 40 inches in October; 47.5 inches in November; 60.25 inches in December; 79.25 inches in January; 60 inches in February; and 20 inches in March for a combined mid-mountain total of 307 inches (25 feet). Even more impressive is the 353.5 inch (29.46 feet) snow total at the summit this winter. Since Opening Day, snow has fallen 59 out of 106 days with 30 of those days recording four or more inches.
This season, snow has surpassed the third row of fence wires across the Yampa Valley. As Sureva Towler writes in her book, The History of Skiing at Steamboat Springs, “By January or February of a typical winter, snow will cover the third fence wire, usually 30 inches high.” Four-wire winters, generally more than 350 inches at the resort’s mid-mountain location, were recorded ten times since the 1983/84 season.
“Spring is the great time of year to gather friends and family and spend time on the slopes,” continued Diamond. “Steamboat’s making it easier than ever to do that with great packages, special spring passes and fun events. As we all know, spring is the time of year when everything lines up just right: great snow, longer days, incredible values and plenty of fun.”
