When the sun comes out during a winter like this, you take advantage.

Mother Nature flipped the switch to winter just a week before Steamboat’s opening day in November, and it feels like it has been snowing nonstop even since — especially in January, when we’ve been buried under more than 5 1/2 feet of snow in the first two weeks of the month.

The series of snowstorms that have been blanketing the Yampa Valley in a fresh coat of white are taking a few days off to gather their strength. So get out there, cruise the groomers and soak up as much Vitamin D as you can before the next storm rolls in on Friday.

We’ve been spoiled with powder this winter in Steamboat, with six powder days in the past two weeks, including the massive 20-inch day on Jan. 5.

As much as I love a good powder day, I can’t wait to get outside and carve up the corduroy on a day like today, when the trees are heavy with snow from recent storms and the sky turns a shade of blue you have to see to believe.

Soak up all the sunshine you can in the next few days because snow returns to the forecast on Friday and through the weekend. That storm system should easily bring to Steamboat the 5 inches it needs to reach the 200-inch milestone this season.

See you out on the hill!
