Ski it, Bike it
Don’t get me wrong, Steamboat is all about skiing and riding come winter. I want nothing more than the snow to pile up and to roll out of bed with a foot of fresh to shovel and then ski. But there’s also the opportunity to ride bikes year-round.
If Mother Nature cooperates, you can ski powder and ride bikes on the same weekend. Access to fat bike rides is pretty easy throughout the winter — just stop into any bike shop in town to rent a bike and get info on where to ride. The real dual-sport weekend comes together when a day of powder skiing is followed by a road ride. Steamboat is home to incredible road rides during the summer. It’s easy to get an hour ride in on River Road or put together a century ride that takes you up north to Steamboat Lake and then down south to Oak Creek.
This past weekend found us riding to the west on a route referred to as the Airport Loop. It’s roughly a 25-mile loop from the base of Steamboat mountain that takes you west through town on U.S. Highway 40 and then onto Routt County Road 44, a quiet gravel road. CR 44 eventually runs into Elk River Road just north of the Steamboat Springs airport. Any bike shop in town can fill you in with the details. Elevation gain is less than 1,000 feet, and the gravel road winds through beautiful ranches, over the Elk River and provides perfect views of Steamboat Resort.
So put your kids into our award-wining SnowSports School or buy your partner a massage, and then go for a ride. It’s guaranteed to give you a different perspective on our little town when the ground is covered in white.
