Exactly one week from today will be Opening Day for Ski Town, U.S.A.®, officially kicking off the 2017 – 18 ski season. Come Nov. 22, 2017, it will have been 220 days since the gondola and chairlifts whisked skiers and snowboarders up Steamboat’s gleaming slopes. As you can imagine, excitement over the impending season is building in Steamboat Springs as we look forward to 145 days of ski season bliss!
Opening Day is also known as Scholarship Day, and is a great way to support Steamboat Springs’ youth. On Opening/Scholarship Day, season passes are not valid; however, all revenues from the day’s specially priced lift tickets will benefit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Scholarship Fund. In addition to supporting a great cause, the first 100 in line will receive Opening Day t-shirts, everyone can enjoy free hot chocolate provided by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, and Bear River Bar & Grill will be doing a special Opening Day happy hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
With ski season only one week away, I can’t help but feel a little bit giddy, knowing what is to come. For starters, there is Steamboat’s famous Champagne Powder® that will set the scene for some of the season’s very best days. Floating across the light and fluffy snow crystals that are amazingly bottomless, dipping in and out of frosted aspen glades and snow-covered evergreen forests, and enjoying the continual face shots that leave you with a frosty grin, now that’s hard to beat!
And then there are those beautifully sunny groomer days (featured image) that have the potential to end with the most stunning sunset you’ve ever seen. A highlight from last season was getting to ride along in a working snowcat with my then 3-year-old son and being so lucky as to enjoy an unbelievably gorgeous sunset from mid-mountain. For me, that was a moment of feeling awestruck by the immense beauty our mountain has to offer.
I also love those early mornings when the Yampa Valley is still asleep in a sea of mist while the top of the mountain is fully dressed in sparkles from the sun’s rays. You feel as if you move between different worlds, leaving a foggy, chilly world behind while you enter into a warm, bright world full of fantastic skiing.
There is so much to look forward to in the 145 days of ski season that lie ahead of us, both on and off the slopes. My husband enjoys building a kicker in our backyard once the snow has settled, and I love getting out and snowshoeing with our dogs (when I’m not on the slopes, of course).
My older son absolutely loves winter and cannot wait for the snow to fly, and my younger son is just starting to learn how much fun the winter season is. Bliss in Ski Town, U.S.A.® is impending, and in just one week, that feeling of anticipation that we all currently have will become a truly fantastic reality.
