For the Love of Skiing
This Valentine’s Day, I’m shooting cupid’s arrow directly at our Steamboat Resort. Sure, you might have a special someone in mind this holiday, but for me there’s no greater love than the love of the outdoors in winter.
The early morning light was a bit flat today. But the good news is that typically means a snow storm is on its way. In fact, as I explored the Sunshine Lift side of the mountain I could already see the faintest flakes of powder beginning to fall from the sky. So as I schussed my way down packed powder runs like West Side and Storm Peak face, I couldn’t help but enjoy these groomers before we’ll once again be skiing the deep fluff.
Some of the best snow I found today was along the edges of our lower mountain trails. Runs like Vagabond and Lower Concentration were so well covered that I couldn’t find a single natural hazard if I had tried. Ducking into the trees off these runs opened up the experience to slightly more technical turns and the crispy crunch of snow that had been glazed by the overnight chill.
As I skirted my way to and fro, I also couldn’t help but give our smaller terrain parks a shot today. Though my 40-year-old body isn’t quite as resilient as it once was, I still find my sense of adventure calling me into areas like Rabbit Ears Terrain Park and some of the lesser known features added to the boundaries of Vagabond and Concentration. These smaller (and flatter) features tend to be a little more accessible to those of us who fully grasp an understanding of our own mortality. Ha!
So grab that someone special in your life and go sprinkle some love around our national forest today. Steamboat Resort is as good a place as any I can imagine to fall in love with the snow sports we can’t help but enjoy.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
