2015/16 Ski & Snowboard Winter Season Ends on Sunday, April 10
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-March 25, 2016-The calendar may say spring, but powderhounds are experiencing mid-winter conditions at the Steamboat Ski Resort, where two feet of snow in the past 72 hours has pushed the summit base over 100 inches.
“It’s been the snowiest March in the last five years, and we still have a week remaining,” said Katie Brown, vice president of sales and marketing for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “With over 5 feet this month and nearly 30 feet this season, Steamboat is enjoying its best spring conditions in years.”
As of 5am, Steamboat received 6 inches at mid-mountain and 10 inches at the summit in the past 24 hours, 14 inches at mid-mountain and 18 inches at the summit in the past 48 hours, and 24 inches at mid-mountain and 25 inches at the summit in the past 72 hours. The resort is reporting an 81-inch base at mid-mountain and a whopping 102-inch base at the summit on powder conditions. Since Opening Day, November 25, snow has fallen 67 out of 122 days with more than half of those snow days (38) seeing four or more inches of snow.
Currently under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6pm this evening, the National Weather Service expects snow across the northern mountains with significant snowfall amounts by Saturday morning in the 8- to 14-inch range. Snow is anticipated to continue through late Saturday afternoon with the next chance of snow returning Tuesday into Thursday of next week.
“Just days into spring and Mother Nature has us right back into full-on winter with mid-January conditions and lots of snow,” said Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “Steamboat is notorious for big storms, and this storm streak is just the beginning of what will surely be an incredible spring mountain experience as we head towards Closing Day.”
Steamboat’s Springalicious festival (April 1-10) features a boatload of free music and unique events like Cody’s Challenge, Cardboard Classic and the Splashdown Pond Skim. Bud Light Rocks the Boat FREE concerts will rock the base area every Saturday with Jakubi (3/26), Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (4/2) and a blow-out, end-of-season show over closing weekend with multi-cultural Grammy winning group Ozomatli (4/9) and Colorado slamgrass pioneers Leftover Salmon (4/10).
