Fans Vote Big in Powder Magazine’s Annual Ski Town Throwdown IV
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-November 22, 2015-Starting with a low seed and staring down the barrel of big matchups, Steamboat Springs proved Cinderella stories do exist by coming out on top in Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throwdown competition. With more than 45,000 votes in the final round, Steamboat edged out Red Mountain in British Columbia to take the title in the month-long online contest.
“Fans from around the world let Powder Magazine know what we already know, Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A® is a special place,” said Rob Perlman, president and chief operating officer for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “It is always great to be recognized, but even more exciting that Steamboat, Powder Magazine and fans banded together to share their love of Steamboat to help us come out on top in the Ski Town Throwdown.”
Steamboat began the competition as the eighth seed in the Rocky Mountain West division, first beating previous champion and number one seed Crested Butte, then surpassing Sun Valley, Idaho in round two. In the Elite 8 Steamboat narrowly eliminated Jackson, Wyoming and then took on Mount Bohemia, top qualifier in the east, in the Final Four. Steamboat is the third Colorado destination to take the title of top ski town in North America with previous winners Crested Butte and Aspen/Snowmass.
“From the slopes to the snow to the town, Steamboat offers an amazing lifestyle, so the Ski Town title is well deserved,” said Nicole Miller, social media specialist at Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “This win goes to everyone who loves Steamboat, including our staff, fans and locals.”
Local Eugene Buchanan supplied Powder Magazine with content to help spur interest in the town, highlighting the resort’s short lift lines and unique hot springs saying, “Located far enough from the Front Range to avoid Denver’s day traffic, it also seldom gets the crowds to track it up. You’ll wait longer to change your clothes in the Tepee at nearby Strawberry Park Hot Springs than you will at any lift.”
