Springuary In Steamboat
I said the “s” word last week, although under my breath, because I thought for sure we would bounce right back to a snowy, normal February. Though the weather’s recent trend has lent much more to March and even April than it has February. Crust and slush is fun and all, but we should be waking up to bluebird powder days instead!
I’m making the most of it and enjoying the blissful sunshine, since there really is no other choice. The snow report did measure one inch of new at mid-mountain, and it surely helped provide a nice soft layer on top of the crust. As the sun began softening the snow, the mix of wet snow paired with new dry snow created a nice buttercream underfoot.
Thankfully, conditions are holding up great due to all the snow we’ve had since the start of the season. Sounds like snow is back in the forecast, so we all need to work together and do our snow dances to make sure it still comes, and stays in the form of snow!
Groomers are skiing fast and fun today from one side of the mountain to the other. My standard warm up on the Priest Creek side had me arcing down Sunshine Lift Line, Rolex, West Side and Lower High Noon. Storm Peak South brought me down to my favorite Lower Rainbow and back up to pay my respect to Buddy’s statue and rip down his namesake run top to bottom. Heavenly Daze and Valley View had some tricky corn snow just to keep you on your toes.
I’m headed back out for a few more turns before I make my way down to T-Bar for a tasty lunch out on the patio.
There’s a USASA event in town, in addition to a lot of weekend skiers. Be safe out there and enjoy this beautiful whether while it’s here. What other choice do we have?!
