Hello from a picture-perfect spring day in Steamboat!
While spring is certainly in the air, surprisingly it isn’t in the snow. After a beautiful warm and sunny day yesterday, I expected the snow to reflect the melt/freeze cycle we typically get this time of year. While these conditions aren’t necessarily bad, skiers and riders usually need to time their run choices with the position of the sun as it warms things up on the mountain during the day. I was very pleased to find carvable corduroy this morning on many parts of the mountain that was anything but frozen.
The best conditions of the morning were found on runs that don’t get a lot of sun during the day, and the only runs that were firm first thing today are trails that see a lot of direct sun late in the afternoon. I did keep my turns to the groomers this morning, as the trees and bumps could use a little warm up before heading that direction. But no complaints here as the corduroy offered up consistent turns with very few other skiers to be seen.
Spring break is in full effect, and it is great to see so many folks from different parts of the country coming to the Yampa Valley to enjoy the magic of Steamboat on their vacations. On every lift ride today, I enjoyed conversations with skiers and riders from every walk of life; everyone was in a great mood and so happy to be here. We are so thankful for everyone that chooses to spend their vacation in Steamboat, and it should be a stellar week of skiing out there.
Pick of the mountain today is lower Rainbow: smooth conditions coupled with a beautiful view of the Yampa Valley against a blue bird sky that never gets old.
There are no clouds expected today, so grab your sunblock and get up here; it is going to be an awesome day on the mountain!
