It’s a sunny Monday morning on Mt. Werner, albeit windy at the summit. Temperatures are balmy at the base, and I was happy to have my shell up top. Stay tuned today for changing conditions and possible lift closures due to high winds and possible thunder.
You’ll find firm, fast corduroy on the upper mountain groomers this morning. Sunshine Peak offered lines that glistened in the sunshine. I zoomed down Sunshine Lift Line to West Side, then took Elkhead Express in search of calmer winds and spring softness underfoot.
Heavenly Daze was still firm, but the closer I got to the base, the softer the turns. Lower mountain is where I’d start if you are getting out this morning, and with the warm temperatures, I expect mid-mountain will be riding smooth by late morning.
The good news is, the changeable weather may mean a storm is already rolling in. We could see some fresh snowfall overnight, and that’s always worth a little wind in my opinion.
One of my favorite experiences so far in Steamboat is to gather a big crew and head to Ragnar’s for dinner via snow sleighs. We did it again this past Saturday in honor of the full, blue moon.
We started with a gondola ride in the evening light and a stop at the Stoker Bar. Then we loaded up in the snowcat-pulled sleigh for a ride down the cat track to Ragnar’s. The clouds kept us from seeing the full moon this time, but it was light enough for spectacular valley views on the way. It’s truly one of the most memorable activities to enjoy with your friends.
We settled in to the cozy dining room for a delicious dinner of really excellent food, from the smoked fish and cheese platter to the carrot soup to entrees of salmon, elk and more. Refreshing cocktails and a worthy wine list kept the night flowing, and with Jon Gibbs on guitar and vocals in the background, the ambiance was perfect. (I’ll spare you footage of the guest sing off.) It’s the special experiences that stand out the most after the blur of ski days and apres afternoons.
We wrapped up in blankets for the ride back through the cloudy night, looking up at the runs we would ski the next day. We caught closing night at Ragnar’s this time, but I highly recommend the experience for next year.
Have a great week and think powder!
