Sheriff’s Picks: The Groom
Despite our fervent wishes, it looks like Storm Peak gave the predicted storm a hard pass. Steamboat garnered only a fairy spit of snow dust last night, even as air temps dropped into the 20s. Onward! We ski and ride the bounty of spring conditions today.
The grooming report is your BFF. Things set up overnight, but there are well-groomed stretches of sugar out there. The key is to follow the trail of the snow cat’s tracks…at least until fierce sun prevails and temps climb again. Once it’s really warm, the yummy spring mush makes everything fair game again–especially the bumps. But this morning, my vote is to stay high on the mountain and stick to the groom.
Starting low and working my way up the mountain: Ted’s Ridge was a fast, noisy ski. Rudy’s Run was plenty fine. Sunset was a nice smooth cruise. And on top, High Noon was best, with a ribbon of sweetness right down the center.
Plus, the view today is outstanding. The sky is a purplish shade of blue and the intermittent clouds are moody. There’s a lot of contrast between the frosty mountains and the melting valley. The pines are dark green and the aspens are standing tall, bare and gangly.
The NASTAR National Championships have Steamboat covered with speed suits today. There are lots of great chances to watch races all over the lower mountain runs. And they sure aren’t complaining about the hard pack!
There’s a lot of drama in town this weekend. Seriously.
The talented high school thespians are doing Grease. The Chief Players are performing a comedic murder mystery, It’s Only Murder, for crowds 18+, at the historic Chief Theater downtown. And Opera Steamboat is hosting five up-and-coming young singers in Library Hall to perform much-anticipated repertory concerts.
Since we’re sticking with spring, there’s some good boogie happening too. Martini Shot takes over Gondola Square on Saturday as part of the Bud Light Rocks the ‘Boat free concert series. Get your groove on with their seven-piece “horn powered pop rock.”
And a note of hope for all you powder-lusters: Our next chance for snow looks like Sunday, with some follow-up storms rolling through next week. Hail Ullr!
10-4: Steamboat’s Sheriff of Shred.Lastly, thanks to the friendly Ambassador at the base, I scored the Steamboat swag that all the kids have been clamoring for. Happy to sign out as your official Sheriff of Shred this morning!
Over and out.
