Send Us Your Bombogenesis
As the tallest mountains at the middle of America remain cold and dry while tropical Florida gets snow this week, it’s a good time to ponder ways to express the weirdness. The East Coast moved beyond the boring old Nor’easter and hunkered in for a bomb cyclone and bombogenesis. I don’t even comprehend what the means exactly. Except it’s Arctic cold, and they’re shoveling a lot.
Meanwhile, here we are in the Rockies, it’s all bluebird skies and dreaming of pow. We are being patient. Kind of.
On Saturday, dearest skiers and riders, freshies are on the way.
In the meantime, sharpen your edges and follow the groom. Also, follow the sun starting with the first run of the day. Ride Sundown early and Storm Peak late. Steer clear of hazards like trees and twigs. Stick to the corduroy when you can. Our snowcat drivers are working miracles under challenging conditions, keeping things smooth and covered with 80 percent of the ski mountain open.
With a storm approaching, it’s high time to invoke your mantras to Uller, Mother Nature and the wiley weather that has been evading us!
Holler it loud and proud in whatever tongue you please: Snow! Nieve! Sneg! Borra! Sne! Sniegs! Snø!
(Translation: English, Spanish, Russian, Maltese, Danish, Latvian, Norwegian)
Perhaps we’ve come upon an urgency to evoke wisdom from cultures of the Frozen North. Find a snow calling to borrow, if you must. According to this interesting story about all the ways humans label snow, “Central Siberian Yupik has 40 such terms, while the Inuit dialect spoken in Canada’s Nunavik region has at least 53.” In Alaska, “the Inupiaq dialect of Wales … (has) about 70 terms for ice.” And “The Sami people, who live in the northern tips of Scandinavia and Russia, use at least 180 words related to snow and ice” plus “as many as 1,000 words for reindeer.”
Not that I need a reindeer, cuz that’s what a gondola ride is for. But it’s interesting, right?
Happy new year! Happier with snow!
