Steamboat

Your vacation planning community

Thursday evening marked the opening of the 100th Winter Carnival. Our skiing heritage runs deep in Steamboat and this weekend is another special three day event that brings out the best in our wonderful town. The Winter Sports Club and the Steamboat Ski Area have shared a special bond rich in skiing tradition that dates back 1/2 century. This combination has produced some amazing athletes, most of them have trained and raced on the slopes of Steamboat.  We've have watched these athletes go on to the Olympics and represent our town with pride. Congratulations SSWSC for a great 100 years. May you be around for years to come.

With the front of the storm knocking on our doorstep, we gladly open the door and let her in. A trace was reported this morning, but the skies have opened and the white stuff is falling hard. Conditions up top were a little blustery, but the 4 inches that had fallen since rope drop certainly made up for it. Sticking to the groomers this morning, Rolex was silky smooth and my turns felt effortless. Visibility was low, but I stuck to the sides of the runs and was able to see much better.

The storm is supposed to continue through the weekend and bless us with another several inches throughout the coming days.

Did I mention it was dumping!  With each chair ride to the top I noticed my tracks from the previous run were covered, it felt like a fresh run all over again. Heading over to the Storm Peak side, I had a wonderful run down South Storm Peak to Sunset. The groomed terrain was replace with a blanket of powder and the fresh snow exploded with every turn.

Rounding out my morning with a few lower mountain runs, I found Valley View to groomed to perfection. There is definitely more snow up top, but the visibility had greatly improved. The skiing is equally fantastic, but you can have the runs all to yourself. Try Ted's Ridge, Lower Vagabond and Valley View if you are looking to find the slopes to yourself.

Have a great day out on the slopes and don't forget to join in all the wonderful festivities going on throughout the weekend.

Happy Winter Carnival.
