I’ve never been one to really get into watching the Winter Olympics. It probably has something to do with growing up in southern Alabama - where the average annual snowfall isn’t measured! But this year was different. I could not quit watching. I was totally captivated by the Winter Olympics! Maybe it’s the fact that the U.S. Team was on fire or maybe I’ve caught the Steamboat Olympic “bug” as I call it! Just take the Nordic Combined events … The U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team, which has ties to Steamboat, made history by becoming the first American team to medal with 3 silver medals for Steamboat’s very own Johnny Spillane. Another local, Todd Lodwick, helped secure the silver in the team event and Billy Demong, who also has ties to Steamboat, became the first American to win gold. Wow – truly amazing!

Now that the Olympics are over, I’m asking myself … what happens after the Olympics? For me, I’ll actually get in bed before 11pm. But for the athletes, what can possibly top that off? Where do they go from here? Billy Kidd, Director of Skiing in Steamboat, is a legend in American skiing becoming the first American to win an Olympic medal in skiing with silver in the slalom in the 1964 Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria. Now, Billy makes his home in Steamboat finding a way to turn his Olympic experience into a life-long opportunity. Check out Billy’s interview about his life after the Olympics on CNBC.

So will this add new trails or just wide open mountainside? What lift would service the area? I do agree that Steamboat is not the best mountain for beginners so anything to help add more green runs would be a great thing!
