Steamboat Takes Top Spots in Magazine Resort Rankings

Best Ski Resorts in North America: #6 in Outside Magazine and #12 in Conde Nast Traveler

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-November 14, 2012-As the 50th Anniversary season draws closer, the accolades for Steamboat Ski Resort continue to pour in. In Outside Magazine’s November 2012 issue, Steamboat was selected as the #6 Best Ski Resort in North America, ranking as the second highest Colorado ski resort in the listing. Conde Nast Traveler’s Best Ski Resorts placed Steamboat as the #12 ski resort in North America.

“It is always an honor when Steamboat is selected as one of the top winter destinations in North America,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “It’s the total vacation experience that Steamboat provides, involving all aspects of our community, which really sets us apart. This is a real town with a reputation for genuine friendliness, and our guests truly treasure these qualities when looking to spend their valuable vacation time.”

Steamboat was again in the top ten of Outside Magazine’s ranking, moving from #10 to #6 this year. Outside determines the scored categories from snow conditions, terrain quality and amenities to affordability, safety and service levels. The rankings also factor lodging options, off hill recreational activities and the après scene. The Outside Magazine rankings are unique because they also look at environmental responsibility.

The resort scored highest for the off-mountain recreational options. The magazine cited the numerous options for playing while taking a break from the slopes, from tubing and ice skating to helicopter tours, bowling and of course the natural mineral hot springs. Steamboat’s environmental practices also stood out among resorts with high marks for its Zero Waste Initiative which diverts trash from landfills with extensive use of recycling and composting.

Ranked number 12 among the top 20 resorts for Conde Nast Traveler, Steamboat was also in the top 6 for resorts across Colorado. Steamboat’s 2012 ranking enjoyed only one point difference from the previous season tally, which is determined by Conde Nast Traveler readers. The resort was recognized in local ambiance and après ski experience/activities categories as well as enjoyed its highest score for lifts & lines. This is the seventh time in as many years that Steamboat has been selected by Conde Nast Readers as a top ski resort in North America.

“These recent rankings reaffirm what we already know in Ski Town, U.S.A.®,” said Rob Perlman, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “Steamboat is a phenomenal place to play, whether it’s on or off the slopes. As new ways are created to enjoy a winter vacation, we look forward to exceeding our guests’ expectations as a world-class playground and destination resort.”

For the 2012/13 season, Steamboat introduces new United weekend nonstop flights from Los Angeles; exciting new food & beverage options including Gondola Joe’s Express, Steamboat Sleigh Ride Dinners and expanded evening operations at Hazie’s and Ragnar’s; the Ski & Snowboard School adult initiative-Signature 5; new Rossignol Experience Center; technologically enhanced Steamboat.com website; and improvements to the Morningside and 4 Points chairlifts. These new additions will continue to build upon last year’s momentum in the base area with the Gondola Square heated pavers, the pedestrian promenade, permanent stage and public restrooms.
