Resort Breaks 400 Inch Mark Three Of Past Four Seasons
Largest Summit Base of Any Major Colorado Destination Resort
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-March 28, 2011-With nearly 33.5 feet of snow to date and two weeks remaining in the season, Steamboat recorded another snow milestone today, passing the 400-inch mark for the 3rd time in the past four years.
“Steamboat is definitely showing why it is the home of Champagne Powder snow with, an incredible stretch of consistent and abundant snow conditions over the past four years,” said Chris Diamond, president & chief operating officer for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “No other major Colorado destination resort even comes close to matching the experience that powderhounds have enjoyed here in Ski Town, U.S.A.® this season.”

Steamboat is in a storm cycle that as of 5am yielded 6 inches at mid-mountain and 7 inches at the summit in the past 24-hours; 16.5 inches at mid-mountain and 20.5 at the summit in the past week; and 65 inches at mid-mountain and 73.5 inches at the summit for March. The resort is reporting a 91-inch base at mid-mountain and a whopping 127-inch base at the summit. The 127-inch measurement is just 10 inches off the record summit base of 137 recorded during the 1996/97 season.
Snowfall will continue through Tuesday with a pattern that favors the northwest Colorado mountains. Storm total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected by late tonight. After drier conditions on Tuesday, mountain snowfall will increase late Tuesday night mainly over the northern mountains and will continue through Thursday. Another storm will bring mountain snow to the area over the weekend. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through tonight for the Steamboat area.
In addition to the current season, Steamboat has recorded 400-inch snow seasons in 2008/09, 2007/08, 2005/06, 1996/97, 1995/96, 1992/93 and 1983/84. Steamboat has seen 21 inches in October; 90 inches in November; 73 inches in December; 68 inches in January; 84 inches in February; and 65 inches in March for a combined mid-mountain total of 401 inches (33.4 feet). Since October 23rd, snow has fallen 100 out of 154 days with 42 of those days recording four or more inches.
“Just a week into spring and Mother Nature has put us right back into full-on winter with mid-January conditions with lots of snow and cold temperatures,” said Doug Allen, vice president-mountain operations of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “Forecasts are calling for continued snow through this week, with the Northern mountains again being the favored areas.”
