Steamboat Spring Break 2013!

Break out your best brightly colored apparel, comb that March moustache, and gather up your family and best friends- it's SPRING BREAK in Steamboat!

There's a relaxed attitude around the mountain as people from all over the world have come to escape the stress of day-to-day life and ski or ride off some steam.  With a high temperature around 50 degrees, today is shaping up to be glorious on the mountain.  It's great day to throw a fresh coat of wax on those carving skis and head out to rip some groomers, which is exactly what I did this morning.

A quick check of the Grooming Map this morning revealed some tempting freshly groomed runs.  Royal Flush, Rolex, Westside, and Three O'Clock looked scrumptious, but I couldn't resist warming up the skis on the freshly pressed Ted's Ridge.

Awesome.

The corduroy atop the steep pitch allowed me to dig in and fly through each turn.  Although last night's freezing temperatures firmed up the snow on Ted's Ridge, the grooming machines broke up the snow enough to set an edge firmly into the hill.  Below is a picture taken about half-way down Ted's Ridge looking back up at the Gondola.

Seeking softer terrain, I headed next to Wally World (off the Sunshine Lift) where the snow softens first each  sunny morning.  Quickdraw and Tomahawk were buttery and fast.  My favorite run of the morning was down Flintlock, which had softened perfectly by 10:00 a.m.  I must have made 50 zen-like linked C-shaped turns before hopping on South Peak with tired legs.  The stress of yesterday was melting away as fast as the icicles on the roof of the Ski Patrol headquarters.

Enjoy this beautiful day on the mountain!  The après ski scene should be excellent this afternoon and t-shirts and sunglasses will be making their appearances throughout the base area.  The time is now to enjoy the relaxing "beach-like" atmosphere at the base - there's another storm headed towards Steamboat just in time for the weekend!
