Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary During Send-Off

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-January 6, 2014-Steamboat will celebrate its skiing heritage by honoring athletes headed to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia and past Steamboat Olympians during the 2014 Olympian Celebration and Send-Off on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

“It’s not one entity or organization, but the entire community that openly embraces these athletes and plays a key role in establishing the core foundation for Steamboat,” said Rob Perlman, senior vice president of sales & marketing for Steamboat. “The Olympian Celebration & Send-Off is a way for the entire community to come together to celebrate the spirit of competition and all that these athletes have accomplished.”

The Olympian Celebration and Send-Off festivities start at 4pm in Gondola Square at the base of the Steamboat Ski Resort honoring the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC), one of the country’s oldest and most successful clubs. This year marks the centennial anniversary for the Club and the Olympian Celebration will honor this milestone by incorporating a SSWSC athlete exhibition, large birthday cake and other fun surprises in the program.

The famed Steamboat Springs High School Skiing Band will provide music for the on-snow flag presentation before past and present Steamboat Olympians take the stage. In addition, several dignitaries along with a big screen mobile television, music and videos will accent the public celebration. The finale of the event includes fireworks and the lighting of the 15-foot tall Community Cauldron, which will burn throughout the 2014 Winter Games.

Following the stage event, a Meet & Greet Autograph Session will enable fans and supporters to meet, share congratulatory messages, get autographs and have photos taken with several 2014 Steamboat Olympians, past Steamboat Olympians and the 2014 US Olympic Mogul Team, who will be making their final Olympic preparations on Voo Doo.

“Steamboat has a rich tradition in the snow sports disciplines - Alpine Skiing, Nordic, Nordic Combined, Special Jumping, Freestyle, Freeskiing, Telemark and Snowboarding (alpine and parks & pipes) - and an Olympic heritage that dates back nearly a century,” said Jim Boyne, executive director of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. “The spirit to strive for greatness and the unwavering community support of athletes of all ability levels, motivating them to fulfill their dreams in both sports and in life, whether that’s just getting started in winter sports or competing on the international stage, is truly what makes this community unique and sets Steamboat apart from any other place in the world.”

Steamboat has hosted three community-wide Olympian Celebrations before the 2002, 2006 & 2010 Winter Games with 5,000 in attendance during the first event and close to 10,000 people braving cold temperatures in 2010. No other town in North America has produced more winter Olympians than Steamboat Springs, a record 79 and counting. In fact, Steamboat sent more athletes (17) to the 2010 Games than many small countries. Steamboat’s Winter Olympians have represented eleven different countries/territories and made over 135 Olympic appearances during 18 Winter Games.
