It’s official and I can now cross off another exciting activity that I have never done here in Steamboat! With the Balloon Rodeo here in town I was able to hitch a ride on one of the balloons on their “test” flights early this morning. Tim Taylor from Salt Lake City, Utah was kind enough to give me a bird’s eye view of the valley. Yampa Valley continues to amaze me with the oxbows of the river surrounded by lush meadows. It was a completely new way to experience our natural beauty. It was peaceful, gorgeous and something that everyone should experience at least once!
The entire process is quite impressive as it literally takes a team of family and friends to rig the balloon and basket, inflate the beast of a balloon and then hold on until it’s time to set her free. All was seamless and organized from our effortless take-off to the perfect landing.
The somewhat less precise part is the direction the balloon flies! We were all at the mercy of the wind and which direction it blows. Of course Tim our fearless, experienced pilot knew exactly what was going on. I, however was mentally trying to figure out how and where we were going to land! Needless to say, we had a smooth landing and my feet didn’t even get wet. If you have yet to experience a hot air balloon ride in Steamboat Springs, you are missing out. It is truly the best view in town and an absolute must on your list of things do to! Besides, when else can you drop in on your neighbor in a basket? Come out to the Balloon Rodeo Saturday, July 9 & 10th and watch the sky fill up with colorful balloons.
Until my next adventure, enjoy the beautiful Steamboat life!
