Steamboat Breaks Single Day Snowfall Record

27 Inches Of Snow Accumulates In 24 Hours, The Most in Colorado

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-February 20, 2012-Steamboat received the most snow of any resort in Colorado overnight with a record breaking 27 inches accumulating at mid-mountain in a 24-hour period.  An additional 7 inches of snow was reported since the 5 am report, bringing the resort’s 30 hour total to 34 inches.

“This is the Champagne Powder® snow day that everyone has been waiting for,” said Rob Perlman, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “Hoots and hollers could be heard reverberating throughout Ski Town, U.S.A.®, with guests and locals alike up to their waists in fresh snow.  And with this much fresh powder, conditions will remain unbeatable for quite some time.”

A strong storm system moved into Steamboat yesterday afternoon, with snowfall starting around 1pm and picking up speed throughout the day and night. Large snowflakes fell in abundance with 27 inches reported at both mid- mountain and the summit at the 5 am report. Mid-mountain has a base of 75 inches, while the summit reports a base of 82 inches.  The forecast is calling for another storm to move into the area on Tuesday, with additional storms predicted throughout the week.

In the month of February, 5 feet of snow has fallen at the resort at mid-mountain, and almost 6 feet (or 71 inches) has piled up at the summit.  The resort is 100 percent open including its legendary tree skiing. The previous record for single day snowfall was in January of 1996 when Steamboat received 26 inches of snow in 24 hours.

“Now the sun is shining, which means Steamboat has powderhounds with rosy red cheeks, white Champagne Powder® snow and blue skies- the perfect recipe for a great President’s Day,” continued Perlman.

With the addition of new snow the Colorado Avalanche Information Center continues to warn skiers and riders of considerably high avalanche danger in the Steamboat Zone, including side and backcountry areas accessed from the resort. Areas beyond the ski area boundary are not patrolled or maintained.

“The best idea on big snow days is to gather your friends and hit the slopes. There’s always room for friends, even on a powder day,” said John Kohnke, patrol director. “It’s especially important to ski and rider with others when you’re playing in deep snow conditions, near trees, or in avalanche prone areas.”

Celebrate recording breaking snow with the Champagne Powder Package. Book by February 29th through Steamboat Central Reservations® to save an additional 20% on lifts and lodging and get $100 in Boat Bucks. As an added bonus, receive a $100 American Express gift card for every airline ticket purchased into Steamboat/Hayden Airport as part of the Champagne Powder package through Steamboat Central Reservations.  With the powder piling up, you have to act just as fast!
