Greetings from the first day of fresh tracks in 2013!
It is great to see some fresh snow in the first days of the new year. I was amazed at how short the Gondola line was this morning; I guess when you have been getting as much snow as Steamboat has, a couple of inches of snow isn't enough to make people jump out of bed first thing and brave the cold temps. The thin crowds didn't bother me a bit, because that means the fresh snow lasts for a number of laps on the trails.
When there are only a few inches in the new snow count, that usually means the groomers are going to be prime and the place to head first. This is getting repetitive in my reports, but I will say it again... it's always worth it to get to the mountain early as the snow is in the best condition it will be in all day. The groomers were stellar this morning - the corduroy was perfect with a nice layer of light snow on top. I could barely feel the ribs of corduroy under my skis as they almost effortlessly carved through the soft snow turn after turn. There is just enough fresh on top to leave a trail of cold smoke behind each skier as they flew down the mountain.
Everything is skiing pretty consistent through out the mountain - we sampled the goods on lower mountain on runs like Heavenly Daze and Valley View, on Pony Express (Middle Rib is groomed today) and up top on Storm Peak Face over to Cyclone. The runs were empty and carving oh so well. There is enough fresh snow out there to dive into some of the bump runs and trees as well; everything is soft and really fun.
Pick of the mountain today is Heavenly Daze - it is skiing fast and smooth; fast wide open turns today!
Looks like light snow will continue to fall through part of the day, then we are headed for some of that beautiful Colorado blue bird sky for about a week. Dress warm today, it is cold up there. And don't worry about the cold smoke... it's all behind you.
See you on the mountain!
