It was a classic spring day in the Yampa Valley. The early morning fog broke and the sun was shinning bright. The cloud layer was low in the valley, giving rise to some scenic early morning turns.
Last night's 1" of new snow was a welcomed treat as I headed over to the Sunshine area this morning. With tempertautres steadily climbing into the 30's, I wasn't even to the top before shedding a layer. It's shaping up to be a wonderful spring day of skiing. The groomers were out in full force last night and the mountain is in wonderful shape. The snow is holding up superbly and with one more week left in the season, it going to be sad to see it close.
The slopes were quiet this morning as I made my way down One O'Clock and High Noon. The snow is firm, but conditions will change by the hour. I still held a solid edge with every turn and had fun making grand GS tracks across the entire run. I stopped to admire the scenery, we are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the state. The view of the Flat Tops Wilderness area was amazing and the fog layer made it even more impressive.
Heading over to the Storm Peak side, I found similar ski conditions. This side usually takes a little longer to warm up and the conditions will be great in an hour. I stopped to cheer on the racers heading up the mountain for the annual Cody's Challenge endurance race. Looks like fun, but I'm glad I heading downhill instead of up!
Rounding out my morning with a quiet run down Heavenly Daze, I slowly started to re-enter the fog zone. I lost the sun, but the snow had already begun to soften. Emerging at the bottom, I immediately felt the base area come alive. Kids were going into lessons, the big air park was getting built for the Pool Party Rail Jam at 2:00, and folks were excited to hit the slopes. Spring in Steamboat is some of the best times of the season, so don't hang up the skis just yet. Get out and have some fun on the slopes. Don't forget to check out the 50th Anniversary Fashion Show, going on at 3:30 at the Gondola Square Stage. Have a great day on the slopes and happy spring.
