Yep, it's snowing again in Steamboat. The powder magnet is on, and we are about to have an awesome few days here in the Yampa Valley.
If you haven't checked the weather forecast lately, let me catch you up to speed... We have a nice storm sitting on Steamboat today through Friday with more than a foot of fresh & fluffy Champagne Powder headed our way. And after living in Steamboat for 10 years, I have learned that when they call for a good storm, we will likely see much more than is predicted. Initially the snow wasn't forcasted to start until late today; well as usual someone in Steamboat turned the powder magnet on a little early, and it's dumping in the Boat.
The 5am report only called 2 fresh inches, so that kept the mountain nice and empty first thing. That's ok with me, because that just allowed us to get lap after lap on Sundown Express with fresh tracks every time while it dumped more snow from the sky all morning long. The groomers are soft, carving well and the few inches of fluff on top made it perfect this morning. Enough snow had piled up that we were earning face shots in our turns; especially around the top of 4 Points elevation. We made our way into a few trees and bumps as well, but those runs might be better later on today after the new snow has piled up a bit. Any run on the mountain is pretty good right now, but it's hard to pass up those groomers on a day like this.
It was much colder up top than I had anticipated, so make sure you bundle up and get ready for some snowy conditions up there. You may want to wax your powder boards up too because you are probably going to need them the next few days - the snow just keeps piling up in Steamboat giving us some of the best conditions in the state. Last year Presidents Day weekend was the most snow we saw all year, and I have a feeling this year it will be pretty good too.
Pick of the mountain today is Storm Face to Sunset - the turns were smooth, consistent, and had plenty of new fluffy snow to keep me smiling through my powder filled beard. There were still a few patches of powder left right in the middle of the trail when I went in for this report around 10am......and it's still coming down strong!
Have a great day on the mountain
