It's starting to feel like Spring is upon us in the Boat. The sun is bright, the temperatures are warm, and in true Colorado fashion it looks like we are going from Spring back to Winter with a nice storm this weekend. With yesterday's bluebird sky, I expected the groomers to be a bit firm this morning; however to my surprise it was anything but that.
The corduroy offered up some fun turns this morning; the snow is creamy with just the right amount of sugar mixed in making for a nice consistency - one person commented today that the snow was "silent". The runs that face north and west seem to have the best snow; the south facing trails are showing some effects of that warm sun shining down from the previous day and maybe better saved for later today when it warms up again. Some of the better runs this morning were Buddy's, Cyclone, Vagabond and Blizzard just to name a few; but as the sun gets higher the whole mountain should come into shape.
There are still some powder stashes to be had out there as well, you just need to search out North facing or shaded spots in the trees. Steamboat mainly faces South and West, but there are plenty of trees and north facing aspects to find. Check out the Burgess Creek area, some of the trees off of Thunderhead/Vagabond, and off the top of Morningside towards St Pats and East Face if you are looking for some fresh tracks.
It's going to stay nice most of the day with that Colorado sun and bluebird sky smiling down on us. Throw on some sunscreen, wear less layers than you have been and get up here, it is a great day to be skiing.
Pick of the mountain today is Buddy's Run - it is skiing fast and consistent. Always pays to be up there early to enjoy that fresh corduroy.
See you on the mountain
