Life has suddenly become more complicated...

Five weeks ago we put our house on the market to sell it. Property prices are falling, quite markedly, in the UK and we were looking to move soon anyway. So, despite missing the height of the market, we have been advised to sell. With the intention of moving into rented accomodation for a while and coming back to the property market, once house prices have fallen, as strong buyers (with no chain).

We thought that everything had gone "quiet" for Christmas, when we get an offer last week. We have accepted the offer, but the buyer wants to complete before 5th February. It is now too late to exchange contracts before Christmas (just not enough working days) and we are in the US between 28th December and 20th January. So, assuming things run smoothly, we have a hectic time ahead (I am actually viewing rental properties at the moment - with the hope that some may still be around by the time we get back)!

So our trip to Steamboat is in the middle of all of that! Exciting, if completely insane, times...

The weekend before this one just gone, we went to an indoor ski dome (with "real" snow) at Manchester: just checking that we could both still balance on our skis. That works quite well for just regaining a little confidence. Photo, below, is me (lime green jacket) skiing down the slope at the "Chill Factore", Machester.

I had asked Bear Claw to collect our Super Value Passes (20 day ski passes) from the ticket office. They let me know that they had, very kindly, picked them up for us today. This is just wonderful: we will be given our SVPs when we check-in to Bear Claw (in the evening) and so can just ski off and straight to the lifts the next morning (without having to queue up and collect them, from the ticket office, ourselves). Incredibly convenient! :-)

Husband is bringing the ski bag (we have a rigid ski tube from sportstube) in, from the garage, tonight. So we can pack up the skis and the boots and ski gear well in advance of flying to the USA on 28th December. We are visiting in-laws (in Los Angeles) before flying on to Steamboat on the 3rd of January. Packing them all up now means one less thing to think about over/after Christmas.

So there is a sense of excitment around the house: Christmas, selling the house and (last, but definitely not least) coming to Steamboat :-).

No, skis and boots still in the loft, but as the Xmas decs go back up so down comes the ski gear (hooray) at least you have not got to cook the Xmas Turkey.

I reckon you are going to have another mega snow trip, well I hope so, but throw in some bluebird days as well.

Hi Mike. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and your family :-)

I have done everything humanly possible to ease the house sale (including got quotes and a provisional move date from a removals company and left a deposit cheque - not to be cashed until we exchange - for a rental property). We just have to sit back and wait now... see how it plays out. Assuming we do exchange contracts, everything is in place for us to go and we can confirm arrangements by email (from Steamboat).

Skis are carefully packed in the ski tube. Boots, helmets and all of the ski stuff is packed into a large holdall. All that is left to pack is clothes and toiletries etc. We go to my Mum's, for Christmas, today and get back on Saturday. We fly on Sunday, so I have just under a day of mad packing and putting away decorations etc.

Are you also packed for your trip to Steamboat? :-D

Happy Xmas Boo, hope life is not to hectic with the house sale and that you can relax for the Xmas festivities, I suspect you are all packed and ready for the trip.

I completely agree: MUCH better than a dry ski slope AND it is MUCH better to take those first "faultering" steps at Tamworth than at a resort... By the time he gets to a proper ski resort, he will waste much less time sitting on his backside and be able to get his money's worth out of the trip :-)

One of our engineers is off up there tonight (Tamworth) and is having lessons pre first ski holiday, his 3rd trip up and is thoroughly enjoying it, says that it is great to learn on.

Yes, definitely staying in the Bath area (unless that US residency visa arrives in my Christmas stocking...): husband's software business is here - so no plans to move elsewhere.

Haven't been to Tamworth for a while, but it does have that "dog leg" in the slope and it can get icy in bits: the snow conditions were consistently good (if a little "granula") at Manchester. We have also been to Milton Keynes (although not for about 18 months, I think): snow conditions are less consistent there, it is more crowded and you get pillars in the middle of the slope. So Manchester is the best (although have never been to the one at Leeds), but any of them just help to knock the rust off of your skiing...

Hope that you had a good weekend in York. Ice sculptures? Sounds good!

Yes, something tells me that this next 3 weeks will FLY past! ;-)

Wow boo, you are going to be busy, are you staying in the Bath area?

The Chill Factory looks like a decent run and not too crowded, perhaps we should try the Tamworth Snowdome some time.

Just catching up with the forum as we were up in York staying with friends since Friday, boy did it rain on the saturday, they had the Angel Fair with ice sculptures displayed around by the Shambles area, up untill saturday it had been perfect weather for them, it was a good excuse for wifey to keep diving into those little shops.

It will be the 3rd before you know it, and you will both be clamping those boots for your first run, lets hope for some of what you had last season.

IMO way too much work and too many potential issues. The simple but expensive solution is to bring along a nanny. Otherwise wait 2 years.
