Steamboat

Your vacation planning community

Yes, it’s time to put away those white shoes. Labor Day is upon us. But before you go getting all down and out, there’s still one last weekend of summer to enjoy and Labor Day weekend in Steamboat is filled with more excitement than any other time of the year. From the Wild West Air Fest to the Stock Dog Challenge, Labor Day is fun for the entire family.

One of the newest and most exciting events to come to Steamboat for Labor Day is the Steamboat Springs Stage Race. If you’re the thrill-seeking, adventurous type, you definitely want to check it out. In its second year, the challenging four days of road bicycle racing includes an individual time trial on Friday, circuit race at Marabou Ranch on Saturday, Moots road race on Sunday, and finishes with a downtown criterium on Monday.

So, just how did this new bike racing event for Steamboat get its start? Event organizer, Corey Piscopo came from a very strong bike racing community in New England and was introduced to mountain biking as a senior in high school. While attending The University of New Hampshire, he joined a collegiate cycling club where traveling to both road and mountain bike collegiate races “was a great way to get off campus with friends.”

Moving to Steamboat three years ago to work at Moots Cycle, Corey was impressed with the quality of roads in Steamboat and the large cycling community, and he was amazed that Colorado did not have an amateur Stage Race. So, he decided to do something about it. He took a chance and organized the 2009 Steamboat Springs Stage Race. The four days of events brought in over 300 racers and this year’s event is expected to approach 400 by Friday. “Labor Day seemed like a great time to get people to travel to Steamboat and businesses in town were in need of a way to generate more visitors on the final weekend of the summer. It is extremely satisfying to help support local businesses through the race in what has been a very challenging economy, and I hope to continue it at an even larger level for many years to come.”

Corey is 29 years old now and says it’s still fun to get out on his bike and race with friends. But he has even bigger plans for competitive cycling in Steamboat. Corey is helping organize the inaugural 2010 Steamboat Cyclocross to be held on September 11th. Why cyclocross? “Cyclocross is very strong in Colorado at the moment with races from early September to late December. It is a blast to race and great for spectators as the format involves road style bikes moving fast on a combination of dirt, grass and pavement. It is another event that will add to the strong calendar of cycling events in Steamboat and generate some new interest in the sport.”

And while racing your bike with over 300 other adrenaline junkies may not appeal to you, you can still take part as a spectator. It’s sure to be lots of fun. Not to mention … Labor Day in Steamboat is full of excitement. From the air, mountain and to the roads, the activities are endless with something to do and enjoy for everyone. So, dry those tears and put on your favorite white shoes for one last weekend!
