Steamboat

Your vacation planning community

Well, you are never quite sure what you are going to get this time of year but the last few days are proof that you can expect to see the full gamut of conditions in Steamboat, what a treat.  I always think of March as the gateway to spring and after a weekend of such mild sunshine filled days, this morning is an indication that winter is not ready to give up.....bring it.  It is a powder day and wow was it a fun morning.  The consistency of the snow is fabulous, super creamy and custard like, a nice float in the clouds.  I did not hit bottom once and was pleasantly surprised at the ease of my turns.  What a great way to start this week.

I headed over to the Sundown side of the mountain first thing.  Lots of whoops and hollars to be heard today and not surprising with the soft layer that blanketed our hills this morning.  I took a run down High Noon to One O'Clock and it was beautiful.  Because the snow is a little thicker than our usual fluff, I enjoyed the runs with a steeper pitch to keep my momentum up.  It was easy to find a nice rythym churning down the slopes and I must say I had a ball.

The top of Storm Peak is pretty socked in but Buddy's Run was more of the same, nice groomed surface with about 5 or 6 inches of this marshmallow fluff on top, especially nice on skier's left where the trees help to light your path down.  I had to hit Lower Rainbow and it was just as sweet.  On my way down I checked out Vagabond and found the visibility to be much more clear and the snow accumulation not quite as deep, making this a good option for a warm up run today.

My thoughts for today are these: powder, trees, soft, overall a very pleasant surprise. I will say this, the visibility is tough, better down low and challenging up top.  Bring out your brightest lens for your goggles today if you have them.  I stuck to the very sides of each run and it was much easier to plot my course.  Stick to the trees and always remember the Four Points area for better visibility with the same great skiing and riding to be had off of this chair.  I loved the ride today and I am sure you will too.  Have fun out there.
