March is starting off just like February. So far we are two for two on snow and with more in the forecast, it's going to be another fantastic week of skiing here in the Yampa Valley. With some of the best snow conditions in the state the word is out and Steamboat currently is the hottest resort to ski. Well, we could have told you that all along!
With 4 inches of fresh snow in the past 24 hours and temperatures already into the mid 20's, today is a welcome change to our chilly mornings. The groomers were out in full force last night and left the mountain in tip-top shape. A low lining layer of clouds hung around the summit for most of the morning. This created low visibility and made me hug tighter to the trees and the sides of the runs. This cloud layer continued to lift with every run and by the time my morning was through, the sun was shining bright and it looks to be another fantastic day in Steamboat.
Sticking the the groomers most of the morning, I had several fun runs off the Sundown Express Chair. One and Two O'Clock were both groomed and the powdery corduroy was wonderful. My skis left huge trenches in the soft snow as I made my way down both runs. I found plenty of fresh snow in the trees skier's right of Two O'Clock. These trees are know as Two Thirty Trees and are a blast to ski. There is always fresh powder to be found and you can usually find some well after a storm has past. It well worth exploring for yourself. Each of us has our own powder stash, mine being those trees. Shhhh!
Heading towards mid-mountain, Cyclone, Hurricane, and Tornado were all groomed to near perfection. I found similar conditions with soft corduroy on each. These slopes were a little more congested due to the clouds up top, but will clear out as soon as the sun breaks out. My suggestion is to try these runs closer to lunch time. The Four Points Chair is always a quick way to access these runs. I often do laps off this chair and usually never have to wait in line.
Have a great day out on the slopes. Don't forget your water and sunscreen. It's going to be a great weekend around here, so enjoy and we'll see you on the slopes.
