Friday the 13th is off to a great start here in Steamboat. With a couple of inches blanketed atop fresh corduroy, it had one skier yelling, "holy cow, this is awesome!" and others hootin' and hollerin'. Just by smiles and laughter of the skiers and riders enjoying the fresh snow this morning, one would have thought it was a mid-winter powder day.
It was a spectacular ride up the gondola this morning with views of a layer of snow covering all the new buds on the aspen trees and to look down at a semi covered Yampa Valley. The sun was starting to shine through the clouds on the top of Storm when I headed inside, but was a bit socked in at first, which kept the new snow in great condition.
I made small radius turns to ski up as much of the new snow as I could as I made my first run down Rudi's to Storm Peak. Buddy's Run was up next and I have to say was the best all morning. I lapped it twice just giggling at all the new snow. The mountain crew has done a wonderful job keeping the trails fun, skiable, and safe. Thanks to mother nature last night and through the weekend we are in store for a great closing weekend.
I also lapped Four Points for a couple of runs down Rainbow which was great as well. I took advantage of being the only one on Rainbow to carve some fun fast turns on my alpine skis. The corduroy is perfect this morning for laying your edge into the snow and making some great turns.
It was so fun to ski some new snow as we approach closing day and hang up the skis for the season. So if your itching to get one more day or one more weekend of skiing in, Steamboat is the place to be. With the new snow last night and more on the way, the conditions are just excellent!
Enjoy all the Springalicous festivities this weekend. Be safe and happy end of winter!
