Starting the season right is the key to a long season of fun on the mountain. Getting your feet dialed in so you can balance on top of your skis or board makes for much easier skiing or riding.

Here are a couple of thoughts that I use to get my center.
1. Simple sport. Keep your body over your base of support.
2. Balancing on the side of the ski is what makes them carve and hold, if I push or try to edge hard, the ski breaks loose and chatters.
3. Explore a range of movements. Modern skiing allows for a lot more variety of movements. Do what it takes to make the ski or board do what you want. Ski and ride with intent then try different movements to accomplish the task.
4. Early season conditions exist. Give yourself a break on your ability and slow down.

Just a couple of quick thoughts. More specifics to come. Happy skiing.

Some drills you might use to help explore the concepts above...
Find a very mellow pitch, Mid-Christie Peak and down is perfect, and ski a very slow parallel turn. As you do it make sure your skis stay parallel and you are able to start the turn without a shuffle or step. What that tells you is your out of balance during that phase and need to move your body differently to be in balance for the new turn. Doing it slow takes away the forces that allow us to be less than accurate with movement.

A second favorite of mine is skiing with my poles at mid shaft. This reduces movements of the upper body and allows you to ski more from the hips down. CW has the ski pole grips pointed dead down the fall line, but more current allows the body to move around the turn with skis, creating only a slight countered relationship.

Tips are great, but having a professional eye on your movements will improve your skills the fastest.

What a wonderful time in Steamboat: the conditions last week may not have been up to Steamboat standards, but they were awesome to me:   I haven't skied in at least 5 years, 7 years since I was last at the boat: Day 1...nice groom runs to get my leg…

Matt does rock (and Dave does too). My 4 year old was doing bumps, blue blacks, and glades after these 2 great instructors ran him and a couple of other rowdy boys all over the mountain. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
