Cruising the Daze.

  Thanksgiving always seems a little special around here in the Yampa Valley. As the days grow shorter and the bears start to settle down for their Winter's nap, our sights change form summer to winter. The bikes get tucked away for a few months and the skis are pulled down from the rafters. The quite nights are replaced by the humming sounds of the snow guns. The skis season is once again upon us. We are in for a wonderful winter, full of many wonderful activities. I can't wait to share my season with you, so tune in daily to the Straight Talkers reports and most importantly get out and make some turns.

  Sunshine and Bluebirds skies were on the breakfast menu this morning as I strapped my skis on for the first time this season. I always get excited for the first turns of the season and this year was no exception . I've been skiing Steamboat for over 20 years  and every season brings a new sense excitement.

  Hats off the the snowmaking crew for doing a wonderful job getting the mountain open and in great shape. We can use some help from Mother Nature with the white stuff, but the cold nights have been very favorable for snowmaking. The guns have been out in full force and Heavenly Daze  and Vogue are in good shape. My freshly tuned skis held a solid edge as I carved my first turns.  The packed powder base is firm but with temperatures expected into the high 40's, the snow should soften up by mid-morning. 

  Given the limited terrain, a turn's a turn. It's just fun to get out and slide on some snow. Have a great day on the slopes and don't forget to take in the first free concert this afternoon. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band kicks off the season with their award-winnning New Orleans-style music. Concert starts at 2:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to make some turns.
