Chirp, chirp... you hear that? Yep, those bluebirds are calling on what has turned up to be an incredible day in Steamboat. The sun-kissed snow was surprisingly grippy this morning. Perhaps it was my newly sharpened edges but I had no trouble sinking an edge into the wide sections of terrain helped along by our tremendous snowmaking team. There was something romantic about zipping down Heavenly Daze on what is the end to another memorable Thanksgiving weekend in the Yampa Valley.
Barely a cloud in the sky and crisp mountain air added a level of relaxation to my skiing I don't often feel. I would describe the quality of today's snow as crystalized, with a glowing shield of moisture. I found that floating the surface of the mountain face today was akin to gliding down the rim of a frosted mug of root beer. Slick and inviting, with a splash of cold smoothness. Overall, super-fun for anyone looking to add a little zest to their weekend.
As the morning turns to afternoon, I could easily see the snow turning from packed and slick to something similar to those mashed potatoes we all gorged ourselves on Thursday. I'd say it's shaping up to be a perfect day to take a run down Heavenly Daze with Billy Kidd, who IS skiing today!
Now don't forget to flash a smile or warm "thank you" to our dedicated Ski Patrol who is out there in force today keeping the slopes safe for all of us. As more terrain begins to open, natural hazards will exist. So tip your hat to mountain staff helping to ease us into our 50th year of snowy tradition here in Steamboat.
