The thermometer and my calendar just aren't matching up today.  While the calendar says April 10, the weather on the mountain says middle of January.  It's a cold one out there, but it's worth getting out for some fresh tracks this morning.

We have had some interesting weather over the last few days in Steamboat.  Yesterday brought some pretty high winds and kept much the mountain closed on Tuesday.  Last night brought just a touch of light fluffy powder to go on top of some buffed out trails offering some fresh tracks in the last few days of the ski season.  The sun is shining bright this morning offering a welcoming sight and giving our friend Buddy something to smile about.

Although it is considerably colder up high (like middle of a frigid streak in January cold) the snow is a bit better up high.  The corduroy was fairly soft and carvable at the top of Buddy's Run, offering up some great fresh tracks.  The snow changed a bit below Calf Roper, but the turns were still great.  The groomer underneath was consistent, while the inch of fresh fluff on top of the entire run was just enough to kick up some snow with each turn and leaving each skiers signature in the freshies.  The mountain was a ghost town this morning, so there were plenty of fresh tracks to be had with out rushing.

I enjoyed some fun and fast turns down Rudi's, Blizzard, Cyclone, Buddy's and Vagabond this morning.  The bottom layer is a bit firm on most runs, but the fresh dusting is saving the day out there.  The groomers are the way to go right now; off trail could be a bit tough until the temperatures change or the sun softens things up, but it is just great to be out there carving turns.  With the mountain closing in a few days, it is just nice to be own there skiing under the sun enjoying some crisp Yampa Valley air on my face.

It is hard to believe that it is closing week; it must have been a good season because the last thing I remember is January right before we had weeks on end of deep powder days.  I love getting stuck in the powder vortex and losing track of time... can't wait to do it again next year.  I want to thank all the ski area employees and Ski Patrol that work very hard each and every day so that everyone can be out there enjoying this magical place.  Also, thank you to everyone that reads the Straight Talk reports; hope that you guys enjoyed joining us this year.

Have fun in the last few days of the 2012/13 ski season... before you know it, we will be cranking up the lifts again for more deep powder next year.  Have a great summer!
