Hello from another beautiful day in Steamboat - the temperature is great, the sun is shining bright and the mountain is offering up fun turns. I am thankful for the sunny morning turns today because from the looks of the forecast, the clouds are coming and bringing some snow with them.
Getting up the mountain first thing once again paid off with smooth turns on Heavenly Daze as the sun slowly crept over the ridge lighting up the corduroy. With limited terrain open, it makes a huge difference to get to the skiing earlier rather than later; less crowds and smoother turns you can sink an edge into. But even as the day continued and more people showed up to enjoy some turns, the snow held up well; especially on the Daze.
It's no secret right now that we could use a little snow, and the skiing isn't quite as incredible as it usually is at this time most years.... but it is all a matter of perspective.
Last year, I unfortunately had an accident that left me unable to get out and enjoy the mountains for a while. After a surgery and many months of recovery, I have thankfully been cleared to ski this year. I will agree the powder could be deeper right now, and it would be awesome to have more runs open; but I am still having a blast out there skiing every single run with a smile. Simply crusing down the mountain with skis on my feet and that fresh Yampa Valley air on my face is a feeling that almost can't be described - it's absolute magic. I wouldn't rather be doing anything else, no matter the conditions. Even just standing at the top of the Gondola looking out to the amazing Yampa Valley is reason enough to be out here.
In regards to the weather patterns right now, we must be patient. Look back a few seasons ago when Steamboat had to open a few weeks late because it was so warm in November it was impossible to blow snow. We were getting into December and it still looked dismal... and then all of the sudden, it started to snow... and snow, and snow. In fact, the snow faucet stayed on until about June that year; resulting in the highest snow total Steamboat had ever seen in a season earning its mark in the record books. That year was absolutely unforgettable; and I am confident we are on the edge of an unforgettable winter this year too. There have been many years where the snow gods decided to come back to town a little later than we would have liked, but in Steamboat we consistently see plenty of snow blanketing our entire valley year after year. We have also had well over 200 inches come down in a month before; so anything could happen!
One last thing to note - did you know the cafe at the top of the Gondola sells yummy Milk Run donuts in addition to other snacks and lots of drink options? What an awesome treat at high elevation!
Pick of the mountain today is Heavenly Daze, as it is skiing the most consistent of our open runs.
Have a great day on the mountain and THINK SNOW!
