Last Blog of the Season
As I've been buried in work the last few weeks, I've purposely tried to avoid all that is Steamboat during that time. Each time I'd go to the site after returning from our trip, I'd pine for the slopes. The funny thing is, I was almost, if not definitely pining for the 'count down' to the trip. Kinda like that old saying about the journey being better than the destination, etc.
Anyway, Ive now come to accept that skiing is done for the year, time to look towards gardening, cutting grass, golfing, and enjoying cocktails on the patio on a warm summer evening.
I dont think I relayed the actual diagnosis of wifey's 'mishap' on the mountain. After returning from the boat,she was officially diagnosised with a major tear of the MCL and a minor tear of the PCL (didnt know there was a PCL actually). So she gets the honor of being off work for the next 3 weeks and, at no added cost, she's gets the honor to wear one of those full leg braces with all the velcro straps.... almost forest gump like.
she's currently doing the rehab, but she just doesnt think its getting better. I guess time will tell of course.
lastly, I do want to thank all of youi again for your sentiments toward her. I did pass them along, and do appreaciate them very much. I also want to thank all who put up with all my 'stupid questions of the day' and were willing to shed some light on favorite runs, restaurants, etc. to make our trip so enjoyable.
hope all that are spring skiing enjoy it, and hope you get a couple end of season dumps. I do hope we can make it back next year. As this looks like it'll be a below normal year for snow this year, I have to believe next year will be a major dumper to make up for it. I will anxiously keep my eyes open in the summer months fo rthe special deals going on at the varouls resorts, and hope to catch up with some of you if our vacations cross paths in 2010.

Your poor wife - that sounds both agonising and so incredibly frustrating: hope that her treatment goes well and she is soon back to full mobility and strength.
Have a really good Summer and make sure you get back on here by September/October time - so we can help you plan your next trip to Steamboat :-D.

A PCL injury is rather rare. Sorry to hear about the severity but as I noted before, I have had a partial MCL tear in one knee and ACL tears in both knees and with one repaired and one left alone, I still get 50-75 days on the mountain every year.
Tell her to keep up with the Rehab. It may seem pointless but believe me it is absolutely worth the effort.

It sounds like she is not having surgery, just physical therapy, is that right? If that's the case, it is pretty tough as it will likely make her more tentative in the future. It's almost better to have a complete tear and have to go through the surgery to get it repaired vs. living with the partial tear and her wondering when it will fully tear or what activity will make it happen. You should come back to the Boat in the summer so that she can have some better memories of the place.

As for your comment about being tenative in the future, you're right on. so much so, that I too was more tenative for the rest of our trip and didnt 'venture' beyond my comfort zone of easy easy blues and greens. Didnt even make it over to the 'left' side of the mountain all week - oh well, guess that's something to achieve in 2010. Of course, my wife has already stated that she'll be 'green' all the time next time.

If I don't scare my self at least once a week skiing (usually after the fact when I realize what I had just done), it is a bad week. I find that pushing one's self to find the edge of the comfort zone is a good way to overcome any adversity.
My first ACL tear skiing resulted from some unique annual toboggan handling training for the Ski Patrol. After rehab, I made sure the first day on skis the next season, I went out and tried it again to make sure I could still handle the conditions. It took some mental ( and physical) prep but as a result, I ski "on the edge" of my capabilities and never beyond if I can help it. Gets the max out of my aging bod without needless risk.
Injury can happen to anyone for any reason and if you want to continue whatever sport or activity you were enjoying, you need to push yourself to "get back at it". OTOH, if one is happy not to do that, one can enjoy themselves almost as well. As "they" say, different strokes for different folks.
Skiing almost every day with people who have had or not had minor or serious injuries has taught me that everyone has their own comfort level for skiing. Mine tends to be semi-adventurous, others are tentative, still others are "flat out". Wherever you and your missus are on the scale, it is the right place. I just hope you try and push it a little bit so you can get the max enjoyment for the level of comfort you feel is appropriate.

- good thought process. As stupid as it sounds, I need a good 'crash and burn' and (hopefully) get us from it unscathed. I just have never had a 'yard sale", so I guess its the old fear of the unknown. Ive only skied like 4 years now, and very limited, and at the boat was the first time Ive ever had my bindings release, and then I was only going like 5 mph.

I hope she recovers 100% both physically and mentally. Is she even willing to go back? Does she hate you for driving this trip? How could she..but then again :). In spite of all your misfortune, it sounds like you are content and longing for more. Hopefully you will be back next season. Peace and I look forward to next years postings on the forum.

- Thanks Mike! as for the running, I never invisioned that I'd actually be 'working' (i.e., getting in shape via running) to prep for a vacation. I do believe that it helped immensely and allowed me to enjoy a complete (well almost complete) run without having to stop because of leg burn.

i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
