All Good Things Must Come to an End

Well, here we are, waiting to board our flight back to the 'burgh'. So, I guess our first trip has officially ended. Let's hope we can get there again next year. Last day on the mountain (yesterday) was pretty uneventful. Conditions were'nt really that great. I think it was officially the first day of our 6 days on the mtn. that the top was above freezing (35ish). So, my hiding at the top of the mountain to avoid the unusually warm boat weather wasnt even working that well.

I do believe Boo and others had some good tips that we'll have to do next time. I guess Im just getting to be an old fuddy duddy, but 6 days straight of skiing was taking its toll. If/when we come back again, I'll try to plan something like ski 3 days, day off, then ski 3 more days. Get some time to recoup the muscles and tendons.

Wifey still not getting better. Actually, she's kinda glad about it. I think the last thing she wanted was to have her knee be immediately 100% the minute we arrived home. So I think her wish came thru. Doc appt tomorrow with the same doc that does all the Steelers, so I'm guessing he knows a thing or two about joints. I would guess an MRI will soon follow. After that, I would guess we'll be purchasing more braces and hardware than you'd see in the latest Terminator movie!!

As a summary to our trip, excluding the wifey accident, a good trip was had by all. We all did massive shopping to aid the local economy. Think my wife herself lowered the national debt by 2-3%. Food was all good, but would still make sure to try a whole new batch of restaurants next time just 'spread the wealth'.j

I also think we made a good choice when we picked Eagle Ridge for accomodations. I'm sure there are tons of great places on the mountain elsewhere, but these seem to fit us just fine. If they could just install one of those 'magic carpets' that goes from our front door to the gondola, now that would be my kinda condo!!!

If I had any reservations, I would've definitely like to have got a little more snow and a little less degrees F. However, that is of course out of our hands. Besides being a little 'freaked out' by the wife's injury, the lack of powder definitely limited by 'gumption' to hit more blues than I did. You kinda have a lot more bravado if you can wipe out in 2 feet of fresh pow pow, than on an icy slab. Oh well, maybe next time.

So,in conclusion, the trip went relatively well and we'll shoot to get back next year, maybe in early January - I would assume that rain and 55 deg highs shouldnt be a problem that time of the year.

Kup.

Kup, thank you so much for sharing your family's trip with us: it has been a delight to read your blogs and look at your photos :-)

Am so sorry, again, about your wife. These things are a risk when skiing - and you see people stretchered off the mountain every day - but there is always a prayer "no me please!". Hope that your wife has a full and speedy recovery, but sounds as though you are doing all the right things and getting top professional help. Fingers crossed that she is all fixed (and fit and strong) for next season.

Eagleridge s lovely and am so glad that you enjoyed it. IF you want that ultimate convenience, then have a LOOK at Bear Claw: I don't know how it compares "price wise", but if you book early enough (like booking and paying my mid-October) then they normally have a very good early booking discount...

We LOVE January (and also early Feb) in Steamboat: we have always had great snow and weather conditions then (although sometimes it is COOOOOOLD! BUT that makes for GREAT snow!). Of course it is impossible to predict the snow/weather with any accuracy (and it has been very unseasonably warm for this time of year during your trip...), but January is often great from snow/weather and very good for lack of crowds too :-)

Thanks again
Boo

I too really enjoyed reading your reports. It's always fun to read about other people's experiences. I hope your wife's recovery goes smoothly and you can return to Steamboat again next year!

Great reports Kup! Every year we make it to Steamboat the first week of February. I have had excellent weather conditions every year! At least 1 powder day and 1 bluebird day. I'm not sure economic conditions are going to allow a trip next year. I may try to get a bunch of people into a condo to $ave as much as possible.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts/blogs from anticipation to participation. All the personal obstacles aside, I hope your trip was as satisfying as you'd hoped. I hope you focus on the positive experiences you had, and not the ones you didn't. I've been going annually for many years and always imagine myself skiing powder and running through the bumps like an olympian. But truth is I'll never be that good. And I am quite comfortable with that.

My goals are simple, encouarge my wife and daughter to advance their ability, without pushing them so hard they become scared or frustrated, so we can all have new experiences on the mountain, together as a family. Then I run the tougher stuff while they have hot chocalate.

Until next year!

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
