Luckily my wife and I were both able to hit the slopes at the same time today. That's rarely the case as our "weekends" fall on different days.
Several other excellent blog posts exist extolling the quality of the snow and weather and powder monkey joy happening on… Continue

Took about 7 runs with Kent and Julie today. We received over a foot of light snow last night and by noon when I hit the hill the visibility was great, the groomers were smoooth, and ah, the trees! Below is a pic of Kent over Eagle's Nest with Sleeping Giant in the distance. Even Eagle's Nest was soft and enjoyable today, and that's saying something for one of the most commuter-oriented runs on the mountain. Was enjoying the riding and pizza at Rendezvous too much to remember to grab any other p… Continue
The hill had two different personalities today. This morning while riding with Matt the sky was overcast, Storm Peak was in thin clouds, and the best visibility was in the trees. Around 2pm the skies turned blue, the sun came out, and Jenny, Kelly and I were treated to a glorious blue bird day with temps in the 20's and puh-lenty of powder on all of our runs. Last night's 5 inches sat on top of the snows that have fallen almost every day for t… Continue
Hit the hill around noon with Rochelle and Kevin. Our first run was a bee-line from Thunderhead down Rudi's to that most awesome of chairs: The Pony Express. There's lots of colorful debate floating around Steamboat many years after that chair was put in, and I come down firmly on the side of TGFPE (Thank God For Pony Express). It's a fast chair that whisks you up to a nice blue, a nice dark blue, some black runs, and for experts, a couple gates leading out of bounds into the "Golf Course", a wi… Continue

Took a short hike up the mountain this morning with Tosh, our seven year old Georgia born-and-bred dog. Tosh is a blend of several varieties of pup, most likely including Manchester Terrier and Black Labrador Retriever. At around 40 pounds we've found her to be an excellent size for outdoor activities. Just enough speed, endurance, and pick-up-able to be fun.
Since moving to the Rockies from our warm southern home, Tosh has displayed a funny behavior when walking in snow any deeper than a coupl… Continue

Today was one of those days that will be talked about for a long time. Comfortable temperatures, good visibility, a solid base, and 21" of fresh powder conspired to make 12.23.08 our first "big" day. Patrol "dropped" the rope above lower Sundown Lift line, including the lower part of Shadows, opening up a few new pistes as well as many acres of super deep virgin 08/09 powder. Almost every run was through a minimum of one foot of powder, while many were through three and now and again, four foot… Continue
Temps today hovered around 20F from mid-mountain on upward thanks to Steamboat's common temp inversion, providing awesome riding conditions. Many great runs were had over the course of about 3.5 hours, including laps in the 2:30 trees, Sunshine lift line, the trees in Wally World, and then a traverse thru Morningside over to St. Pats. St. Pats was in primo shape, and isn't even close to being tracked out from our last two storms. As usual, the whoop-dee-doo ride thru Cowboy Coffee down into Morn… Continue

The "dawn patrol" squad this morning was Todd, Lou and myself. We left the base area a few minutes after 7am. Took this pic right around 7 when I arrived at the base. Was pretty dark, the snowcats were grooming headwall, and in the background you can see the multi-story lights of Bear Claw.

Am chained to my desk, but luckily someone got out. Here's a film clip of the mountain this Saturday from Steamboat's own Shayboarder.

Didn't slide on snow today, but did take a Gondy ride to the top of Thunderhead to check in on the high-altitude-straight-talk-reporter-station (HASTRS), otherwise known as "that Dell computer in Patrol HQ".
After the warm temps yesterday and last nights cool temps I thought a thaw/freeze cycle would leave the snow a bit crusty, but the conditions today seemed similar to yesterday....warm air and soft snow. This was confirmed by Garett's Straight Talk re… Continue

Storm Peak opened today, so I tagged along with Kent and Julie to see how the top of our mountain was skiing. With a late 12:30pm start we weren't likely to find much untracked pow, especially since I'm avoiding the trees till we get a bit more snow; but the conditions on runs like Buddy's, Cyclone, Side Burn on the upper mountain were *STELLAR*. Plenty of loose powder on a completely carve-able packed powder base. Kent noted that it was so warm when we got out of the Gondola at Thunderhead that… Continue

I thought last year's photos of the day were lost to the sands of time because our old POTD hosting service (RSN) only kept one week's worth of archives, but now, low and behold, one of our community members seems to have captured many (if not all, I haven't checked yet) of last year's POTDs.
Our goal this year is to put a better photo gallery widget up on steamboat.com, that includes all of this years pics. Now th… Continue
Left the base area under the cover of darkness (a bit after 6:30am) and snow-shoed up to the top of Christy peak with "the dawn patrol" otherwise known as some guys who wanted to get in a climb and run before the lifts started running today. We're not to be confused with Steamboat Ski Patrol :)
Not much wind, a little snow falling now and again, but otherwise a comfortable hike. We weren't the first people up today, and one intrepid skier beat us to the top, and then skinned back up again just… Continue
Just took 1 run down Sitz/See Ya and 3 runs down Sitz/Vogue; starting the season off nice and easy. Sitz/See Ya was a little fast for my taste (I like loopy carved snowboard turns when not in the trees) but the coverage was good for early season. After one run down Sitz/Vogue I decided to loop that a couple more times because of the spring-like quality of the snow at the top of Vogue. Super carve-able. Didn't take my new board out for fear of rocks, but I didn't see or feel (or hit) anything but… Continue

i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.
Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.
I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
