The Joys of Renting ...

I’ve been living in Steamboat for almost 2 years now … in three different houses … paying rent the entire time. Now, we’re finally ready to own our own home and here’s just one of the many reasons why ... Do you remember my wonderful dog, Drift, from a previous blog? Well, he decided he would “drift” into a skunk a few weeks ago. Its 9:30pm, the dog wash down the road closes at 8pm, so off to the grocery store for tomato juice it was. While waiting in line to check out for 4 galloContinue

Fly Fishing for a Great Cause ...

I thought I would take this opportunity to blog this week about a really great cause and a great event - the 3rd Annual Steamboat Casting 4 A Cure Event (July 30 – August 1). Many Steamboat locals give access to their land and water for this annual fly fishing tournament that raises money to fund research and family support of Rett Syndrome, a rare and debilitating neurological disorder.

Summertime is here ...

Summer is definitely here! My dog, Drift, especially loves this time of year. As his name implies, he "drifts" around the neighborhood visiting everyone and occasionally breaks loose for a nice swim in the river.

On the mountain, the views are just incredible this time of year. I took these photos from the go… Continue

Spring at The Steamboat Grand ...

The weather can't seem to make up its mind this spring - from wind, rain and snow to beautiful sunshine. But with one look at all the green vegetation, you forget how crazy the weather's been. The snow is melting and wild flowers are starting to bloom. Just check out the view of the mountain from the hotel:

Ah ... Spring is here! And with Spring comes the urge to plant that beautiful flower or vegetable garden. Or, maybe, you might actually knock off a few home improvement items from your to-do list.

Strong winds didn’t put a damper on all the fun …

While last Friday’s strong winds may have shut down the mountain, it definitely didn’t stop kids from having fun at The Steamboat Grand. After the announcement that the lifts would not be operating, the hotel’s banquets, food & beverage and A/V departments jumped into action setting up one of the meeting rooms into a theater. And, yes, it even included a large movie screen.

What’s after the Olympics …

I’ve never been one to really get into watching the Winter Olympics. It probably has something to do with growing up in southern Alabama - where the average annual snowfall isn’t measured! But this year was different. I could not quit watching. I was totally captivated by the Winter Olympics! Maybe it’s the fact that the U.S. Team was on fire or maybe I’ve caught the Steamboat Olympic “bug” as I call it! Just take the Nordic Combined events … The U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team, whiContinue

Chaps - Great burgers, great service & a fun time!

Ah ... there's nothing like a big, juicy hamburger for lunch! After eating salads and other green leafy things all week, I decided I would indulge myself by ordering a half pound burger from Chaps for lunch today. Friendly and helpful, Maggie and Patrick were instrumental in helping me choose between the Truffle Oil & Herb or the Cajun fries. The burger was incredible - cooked just the way I like it and the Cajun fries had just the right zest to them. Now … I a

What does it take to raise an Olympian?

It takes a community - the kind of community like Steamboat with an Olympic tradition dating back to 1932 when John Steele became the first Steamboat Olympian. Known as Ski Town, U.S.A.®, Steamboat produces more Winter Olympians than any other town in North America. And, this year, Steamboat will send a number of amazing athletes to Vancouver, British Columbia including: Todd Lodwick, Johnny Spillane, Michael Morse and Taylor Fletcher to name a few.

What makes The Steamboat Grand so grand?

If you’ve ever worked in a hotel, then you know what I mean when I say you actually see what goes on behind the scenes. It truly makes you appreciate any stay in any hotel. Working at the Grand has been an awesome experience for me. You quickly realize that it’s not just its western décor, the spacious and well-furnished rooms, the full service spa, award-winning dining, the year round heated pool and hot tubs, the fitness center, and the list goes on-and-on that makes the Grand so grand. It’s… Continue

Poolside at The Grand ...

Thursday was such a beautiful day – blue skies, lots of sunshine, temperatures reaching 30 degrees! An amazing day and because it was so beautiful, I decided I would take the opportunity to get out of the office and see what was happening poolside at the hotel. The day started out fairly quiet. I guess everyone was on the slopes that morning. At first, I could barely snap a photo because of all the steam but later on I was able to grab some nice shots.

Jack Ingram and Doug Moreland set to perform at 2010 MusicFest - January 8th

Wondering just what is MusicFest? With a name like that, it’s got to be loads of fun – right?? The best explanation in my opinion about MusicFest can be found at their website (www.themusicfest.com) …MusicFest is “six days, 30 bands, a world-class ski resort, a really big tent and more than 40 shows” with the finest Texas & Americana music. Wow – that really sums it up! MusicFest kicked off this Tuesday and did so with a bang as Robe… Continue

Want to be a local?

Ever gone on vacation and caught your self envying the “locals”? A vacation in Steamboat will definitely have you seeking confession before you know it. I know from experience because that’s exactly the way I felt almost two years ago. My husband and I planned a vacation trip to another Colorado ski resort - who’s name shall remain unmentioned (Cut me some slack … I was a first timer … I didn’t know any better!) and was hooked immediately. Then, just two months later, we planned another vacatio… Continue

So will this add new trails or just wide open mountainside? What lift would service the area? I do agree that Steamboat is not the best mountain for beginners so anything to help add more green runs would be a great thing!
