Spring has sprung here in the Yampa Valley. If you are like me, a great dose of spring skiing is definitely in order by middle March. We have had a wonderful season so far and to top this great season off, what better way to wind down the year with some sun and warmer temperatures. We have had a wonderful week of spring skiing in beautiful conditions. With a little less than a month left in the season, it's far from over. Get out the Hawaiian shirts, bust out the sunblock and get ready for…Continue

Hello from an in-between seasons day here in Steamboat. Is winter sticking around or is it turning to spring?
Today has an interesting mix of seasons, light conditions, snow conditions and temperatures on the mountain. But no matter what season or condition we are having it is always a good time…Continue

I hope you wanted butta with your Tuesday morning breakfast because the mountain is serving up smooth, creamy goodness and everything is better with it. Next to deep pow skiing, my favorite conditions would have to be fresh cord with fluffy snow piled high. Love it. Today just had awesome written all over it from the beginning, I saw the golden Gondi and felt like it was my 4 leaf clover for the week.

Happy Monday everyone! I was off to an easy start today, not moving to fast but looking to take a gentle cruise on the hill. I was up yesterday and although the sun was shining, it never really got that warm which paved the way for a nice morning of groomers on the hill. This is what I love about Steamboat, there is always something for every mood whether it be bumps, powder, trees or just easy riding. Given my mood today, groomers won the pick.
The fact that Ted's Ridge was…Continue

It's funny. If you look back at the last several posts here on the Straight Talk you'll see that the mountain conditions have been changing almost daily. We've seen some wild swings from warm weather, snow melt days in the 50's to winter storm advisories. Welcome to March in the High Rockies.
What is all this talk during the past week about spring has sprung in the Yampa Valley? I'm officially calling an end to spring and jumping back into winter. Steamboat is currently under an winter storm warning and it's dumping. We've received 4 inches already and there is more on the way. It was a wondering morning of skiing, but I would highly suggest to get up there early and enjoy all the new powder.…Continue

Spring has sprung in Steamboat! March in Steamboat means longer and sunnier days that are perfect for spring skiing. After all the powder skiing I've done this season, today was a refreshing change. This morning a hot air balloon graced over the base of the mountain and put smiles on faces of people headed up for a day of fun.…Continue

It's starting to feel like Spring is upon us in the Boat. The sun is bright, the temperatures are warm, and in true Colorado fashion it looks like we are going from Spring back to Winter with a nice storm this weekend. With yesterday's bluebird sky, I expected the groomers to be a bit firm this morning; however to my surprise it was anything but that.…Continue

[Photo: a camp robber takes off with my breakfast]
After yesterday's "free refills" where the all-day dumping snow outpaced our attempts to ski it off, today's reported five inches (eight up top) is just icing on the cake--or rather icing on top of the frosting. As Valerie…Continue

Well, you are never quite sure what you are going to get this time of year but the last few days are proof that you can expect to see the full gamut of conditions in Steamboat, what a treat. I always think of March as the gateway to spring and after a weekend of such mild sunshine filled days, this morning is an indication that winter is not ready to give up.....bring it. It is a powder day and wow was it a fun morning. The consistency of the snow is fabulous, super creamy and custard…Continue

There's a well-known saying in Colorado ~ "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes." The month of March is certainly shaping up to hold true to this old adage.
Yesterday afternoon saw temperatures in the 50's and slush-snow reminiscent of our best spring-like conditions. But as of this morning,…Continue

Some things go really well together... like peanut butter & jelly, or a fast car & a open road. But todays perfect pairing is the best of them out there - blue Colorado sky & deep Champagne Powder ® snow

So....today is turning into quite the powder day! Maybe it was the white sky and blanket of fresh snow I woke up to, maybe it's that March is looming at the end of the week, waiting somewhat ominously as the signal for spring break, bluebird days, and spring skiing, or maybe it was just the 2 cups of strong coffee I started the day with. Whatever the case, I was really excited to get on the mountain today and I can't tell you how surprised I was with the conditions that I found. With 1"…Continue

It is hard to know where to ski on a day like today but let me tell you this: IT DOESN"T MATTER! Fluffy, soft, phenomenal, beautiful, blissful. This has been an awesome season so far and I don't see any signs of that changing. What a year it is when you know that any day you head out onto the hill, you are getting a winner. Whether it be groomers, powder (and there is plenty to find), bumps (aka pillows), glades you name it you will find it and when you do, there will be a huge smile on…Continue

I've got to hand it to the snow Gods. Like any good deity, they seem to always prepare for mass on Sunday. Today was certainly no exception. Our 5am six inch snow report was more like 8-10 inches by the time the gondola opened and it's only getting better.
First tracks down Twilight were filled with…Continue

Some days are just meant for cruising. This morning happened to be one of those days. With storm clouds on the horizon and a good chance of snow later this afternoon, the groomers looked too good to pass up. Now don't get me wrong, there is still plenty of powder left in the trees and the moguls are soft as pillows, but this morning I wanted to get out and hit the corduroy. …Continue

A fresh blanket of snow graced Steamboat last night and I headed out to enjoy the freshly fallen snow on our public land. Did you know that when you ski at Steamboat Resort, you are skiing on the Routt National Forest? Steamboat Resort operates under a Special Use Permit (long term lease) with the United States Forest Service to offer developed recreation opportunities (skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing) to the public. This land is your land, this land is my land...…Continue
