Hello from another powder day in the Boat!
What a change in weather we have had since yesterday afternoon on the mountain. Yesterday's storm came in quick and blessed the ski area with 5" of fresh snow which almost all fell after the lifts closed on Tuesday. It was fun watching the…Continue

The first day of spring still is more than two weeks away, but spring skiing is in full swing at Steamboat Resort.
I ended my day Monday by catching last chair and skiing some very slushy lower mountain runs, so I was curious about early-morning conditions Tuesday during the spring freeze-thaw cycle.Continue

I was super curious heading out on the mountain today. Given the warmer temperatures that we have been seeing lately, you never know what the conditions will be like first thing in the morning. Well, I had nothing to worry about. Whatever Spring is trying to…Continue

This morning's blue skies are incredible, just incredible. What a glorious day to be up on the mountain enjoying the thrill that comes from skiing and riding our National Forest.
As I explored the snow today, I found that the groomed trails were nicely set up for some controlled speed. Last night's…Continue

Powder up top!
March is definitely living up to it's reputation. Winter up top, spring down below. It's a tale of two mountains this morning. The winds have picked up and most of upper mountain is on a weather hold. All that said, there is one thing for sure that is a positive. The skiing is fantastic this…Continue

You know, being a Straight Talk Reporter is not all riches, fame, and glory.
Sure, we get to wear the latest in fashionable ski uniforms (or at least they were fashionable in 1993). Yes, we get to ski the mountain a lot (or more like we have to ski the mountain a lot, no matter how cold and…Continue

There's a carnival atmosphere in Steamboat as we kick off Mardi Gras week with sunny blue skies and comfortable temperatures. This morning the snow was FAST, especially at the top of the mountain. I couldn't help but smile as I zipped across the corduroy on Rudi's Run. The freshly-pressed cord made turning my carving skis easy and so much fun. …Continue

At times like this, with warm sunny days and cold and clear nights, the early bird doesn't catch the worm, the late bird does.
At 8:30am, most of the mountain is still bathed in shadows and skiers will find relatively hard and crunchy conditions, even on groomed runs. However, once that sun rises above…Continue

Good morning from another spring-like day in Steamboat! Although, I'm happy to report that there were flakes flying through the air as I made my way up Storm Peak Express! Even thought the forecast isn't calling for much, we'll take anything we can get at this point. Yes, we're spoiled here in Steamboat, but that's why we live here after all!…Continue
The skiing is excellent up top today. With February coming to a close this week, I am still enjoying every day of skiing that I can get. Today is a little brisk, lighting is a little flat and the terrain is a little less crowded than I have seen recently. I would plan on a light lens in your goggles and maybe a face mask for protection against the winds up high but prepare for a nice day of carving out there. The groomers are surprisingly soft and so were the bumps. I was quite pleased…Continue

The weekend is going by fast here in Steamboat.
Not because time is flying by, but because we are skiing fast down all the manicured corduroy available to us this weekend. Our grooming team has done an excellent job preparing the runs each day allowing skiers and riders to carve up their favorite runs on smooth conditions.
It's an overcast morning on the mountain, which can make it hard to see in the flat light. Certainly the right goggle lenses make a nice…Continue

Long lines at Pioneer Ridge this morning!
There is something magical about standing at the top of a run and seeing nothing but fresh snow. No tracks, no turns, just a clean canvas waiting to be curved up by you. Today was one of those special mornings. With the majority of the population of Steamboat…Continue

Some days are better than others on the mountain, but today I am really appreciating Steamboat.
Yeah, it's pretty windy on the mountain today and not very warm. Sure, It's been cloudy and gray all morning with flat light conditions. No, there isn't very much deep powder to play in right now. …Continue

After a brief dry and warm spell, a storm rolled into Steamboat last night bringing with it 6 inches of fresh powder and a lot more is predicted to fall before the end of the weekend. Break out those powder skis and head up here, because it's going to be a Champagne Powder…Continue

Ok, so I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is that until the storm rolls in later today and refreshes the mountain, the conditions in the mornings are currently best described as, um, hard-packed and firm variable. The good news is that there is a five day storm cycle on the way, we have had over 300" inches of total snow so far, and the skies are clear and visibility is excellent. …Continue

Hello friends and family of Ski Town USA! I'm elated to be back to the 'boat and again part of the Straight Talk family. After a few-year hiatus I have returned for the remainder of the season and look forward to reporting from the greatest ski town in the country.
During this time, every four years, I wake each morning with Olympic-caliber inspiration. Today was no different. As my first day back to Straight Talk, I felt it was only appropriate to ski my favorite runs and…Continue

It is nice to see the big ball of fire in the sky today. With all the snow we have had, I can hardly complain about the great skiing that has graced this season but it is always nice to see the sun shining on the slopes of Mt. Werner. It is not too warm out there but count on a nice inversion at mid mountain that will only improve as the day moves forward. The skiing was nice, a little breezy up top and some new snow to be found in the trees where all of the powder is protected from the…Continue

Ok... you might read the headline of today's post and think I was giving a wedding toast. But as all skiers and riders know on a lovely morning like today, the groomers are where it's at.
Runs like High Noon (top to bottom) and Sunshine Lift Line were a sweet treat to sink a hard edge into. Buddy's Run…Continue

With several weeks of snow and colder than normal temperatures, Mother Nature decided to turn the dial and give us a taste of spring. The current temperature is 41 degrees and it feels like spring is in the air. I'll be honest, it feels great, but I know it will be short lived. With more…Continue

After watching rain unfrozen snow fall in downtown Steamboat last night, I have to admit I wasn't optimistic about the snow conditions this morning. Rain equals ice, and at Steamboat, we don't do ice. .Continue
