I was not expecting the conditions that I was greeted with this morning. Zero on the snow stakes at 5:00 AM, not the case when I stepped off of the Gondola at 8:25 AM. What a lovely treat to see at least a few inches on top of a nicely groomed surface. The sunny days have been wonderful but now it is back to the business of winter, it is a welcome site. I looked at the grooming report thinking that even this nice layer of fluff would still be at its best on top of the rolled terrain. I…Continue

There's really nothing I can name that gets my juices flowing more than the blend of low, early morning sun on my face, fresh Rocky Mountain air in my lungs, and plush corduroy at my feet. Today was the kind of day that will linger long in my memory.
First and foremost, the weather today is perfect. …Continue

It's another beautiful morning in the Yampa Valley, the sun is shining bright and the skies over Steamboat are bluebird once again. The cool morning air is quickly beginning to be replaced by the warmth of the sun and the skiing is wonderful. If you are into skiing groomers in the…Continue

What is the most fun you can have on two feet? Skiing & Snowboarding of course.
It's a fast kind of day up on the mountain, with empty runs and consistent snow to carve on. The sun is shining down through a clear, deep blue sky lighting up the lines of corduroy on the mountain…Continue

- a perfect winter morning -
Today was one of those days I dream about. Heading up the Gondola first thing this morning, I gazed out on the snow-capped Rocky Mountains and took the time to soak it all in. The sun beamed down on the valley below as the…Continue

Even in Steamboat, home to Champagne Powder® and the most consistently deep snowpack in Colorado, we sometimes have dry spells. I know, I know, it's hard to believe. But yes, it's true. Sometimes the snow stops falling, the skies go blue, and all we're left with is a beautiful mountain of shellacked aspens, manicured groomers, and over 165 runs and nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain to explore.…Continue
If you haven't ever seen it before, it's like nothing you've ever seen before. Part ski race, part rodeo, part train wreck. Most of these guys are used to getting thrown from an angry bull so skiing Stampede through some gates and over a jump is really no big deal. Sure some of them have never…Continue

There's something about the way the sun sweeps west across a wide plain of freshly groomed snow that brings a smile to my face every time. Glimmers of light threw long, early morning shadows across many of the runs I explored today and it was nothing short of sweet.
Seems like the mountain groomers…Continue

Ski Town USA, so true!
After a wonderful week filled will snow and fresh powder, I thought it would be nice to soak in the sunshine and hit some cruisers. The mountain seemed to be groomed to perfection and every…Continue

The sun is out, the temperatures are comfortable and the skiing in Steamboat is exceptional right now.
It has been snowing a lot in Steamboat over the last few weeks, and that unfamiliar sight of blue sky and sunshine is making an appearance for the holiday weekend ahead. I am proud to…Continue

After nearly a month straight with the Steamboat weather meter set to storm cycle, the sun is finally out, the wind is down, and the temperatures are...well, the temperatures are still cold, at least in the mornings. But hey, the sun is out!Continue

While every skier has his or her own preferences on snow type, terrain, skis, and apres-ski cocktail of choice, almost all skiers can agree on one thing: an empty mountain is much better than a crowded one. And despite over 200 inches of snow for the season, and over 5 feet (!) of snow in just the first half of January, the slopes…Continue

This is one of those years where it is nearly impossible to decide which day to take off from skiing/riding and actually get some things done. For most Steamboaters this is the case. Laundry piles up, the house is a mess, dishes don't get washed and yet the happiness factor is high. The mountain is as good as it gets. Every day up I am amazed yet again as Mother Nature washes over us and blesses this Valley with tons of that white fluff that makes everyone smile and fall further behind. …Continue
Today was just one more example of WHY we do the Straight Talk Snow Report. The 5am report listed "a trace of new snow since the mountain closed yesterday" but the conditions up top were DEEP.
There must have been at least 8 inches of snow in most places I explored today, with pockets up to knee…Continue

Enough with this inches stuff, it's time to start measuring our storms in feet. The snow Gods are definitely looking down on us this year and this week has been no exception. The skies darkened up late Wednesday night and it started dumping! By the end of this storm we had close to 2 feet…Continue

Today is DEEP

Every year after the holidays have passed, I focus in on pushing my skiing to the next level. Runs that seem to challenge me and nearly every skier on the mountain are the mogul runs. With a fresh inch of soft snow today, I was determined to concentrate and crush some mogul runs.
You can find great…Continue

There is a difference between skiing alone and skiing with friends or family. With friends or family you have an external motivator, somebody to learn from and show off to, and importantly, someone that can lighten the mood with a laugh after you've yard saled your skis and poles across the run after a big crash. …Continue

There is not much to say about today except for to get outside. This is the day you have been waiting for. There is absolutely something for EVERYONE today on the hill. The conditions are fabulous and all of the terrain is right up anyone's alley. The groomers are super smooth, the powder is fluffy, the bumps are soft. The visibility is top notch and the temperature is perfect. It is chilly but I think that is the reason the snow is so good. I would recommend a good face mask for…Continue

When you can barely see the peak of the mountain from the bottom of the gondola you know it's going to be some good skiing up top. And when the Rocky Mountains see a winter storm roll through like the one we are experiencing now, Steamboat is a great place to be.
In a word, the snow up top is DEEP. …Continue
