Changes are coming to Steamboat today, and it is a morning of transition.
Yesterday offered us a glorious spring break day with perfect blue bird skies and warm temperatures. Today is a different story... the clouds are moving in quick and there is a big storm on the horizon. We enjoyed a…Continue

Rise and shine, Steamboat! It's crazy to think that just a week ago I skied some of the best powder of the year. Today, I skied some of the best groomers. Seasons are an incredible aspect of the environment we live in, and we are so blessed to experience such vast differences during all parts of the year. Here is a nice comparison of our beloved Buddy Werner statue from last week to this week:…Continue

As the icy tingle of the morning air slipped under my collar and tickled my spine, I couldn't help but focus my sights ahead and smile. Yesterday's storm blew through town leaving us nothing but crystal blue skies and dry, fluffy snow.
Even the groomed corduroy was supple under foot. My edges cut…Continue

If you happened to listen to the 5:00 snow report and rolled over and went back to bed or you haven't looked out the…Continue

The temperature is comfortable, the sun is shining bright and it feels like spring break in the Boat... for now.
While the calendar says spring, conditions on the mountain still reflect winter holding on tight. I had anticipated some firm conditions first thing this morning, but was pleasantly…Continue

A fresh foot at the summit over the past two days + bright sunny skies = Bluebird. Powder. Day. Perfection.
Winter is going out with a blower powder BANG! Today was one of the best powder days of the season, although there were many, many amazing powder days this season. Today I skied my all-time favorite line at Steamboat Resort and want to share it our loyal Straight Talk readers. I call the line "Rope Line Left" and it's on North St. Pats. This run sits in Most…Continue

It's a March Madness powder day in the 'boat! Maybe since I was a late comer this year, or maybe because I have a day job--I'm happy to say that today was my best powder day of the year! I could tell by the way the flakes were falling as I made my way up Storm Peak Express that there was a lot of snow waiting to be skied up top. I wasn't mistaken...…Continue

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I certainly do feel lucky with yet another great day out on the slopes of Steamboat today. What beautiful shape the snow is in and the fact that the temperatures never got that cold last night certainly did everyone a favor. When the day before was as sunny and warm as yesterday, the warmer nights keep the surface nice and soft which is perfect. I will say this, wear your lighter lens, the light is flat so sticking closer to the edges of the runs will serve you…Continue

Today's snow was felt like sweet crystals of sugary goodness that urged me to dance on the snow like I had candy in my heels. Raise up your hands and give praise to mother nature who has once again delivered an enjoyable Sunday of skiing in Steamboat.`
Considering it's now mid-March and we're only…Continue

The sky is clear, the runs are empty and it's a good morning to do some flyin'.
Spring has arrived in the Boat, and we are enjoying great weather and comfortable temperatures to carve some turns in. It has become that time of the year where the elevation and aspect of the runs direct you where…Continue

While technically it is still winter, we have spring fever here in Steamboat and it is my defintion of paradise.
Skiing the mountain right now is the best of both worlds. Winter-like temperatures overnight kept the snow soft and smooth all morning. Spring-like sunshine and warm…Continue

What a beautiful morning, there is not a cloud in the sky and some new snow has graced the valley yesterday paving the way for a fabulous day to ski and ride on the hill. I had a super enjoyable morning cruising around on top of a beautiful layer of frosting. This time of year you never know what…Continue

Don't let the minimally snowing skies downtown and at the base of the mountain fool you: It's DUMPING up top! A full parking lot, no lift lines and sleeper snowfall is what I love most about Steamboat!
As I made my way up the gondola I could see the snowflakes get bigger and bigger. I headed over to Sundown Express and started down High Noon before ducking into Twilight. I was greeted with fresh tracks of at least five inches of velvety powder. The footing underneath was still soft,…Continue

Timing is everything. The dance between seasons can work as a road map to your day and by this I mean, follow the sun, and who wouldn't. The temperature is just lovely. There is a slight breeze out there but overall a very pleasant climate on the hill this morning. I strongly recommend heading up top first thing when the sun has been out the day before. The conditions were superb particulary on the North facing runs. I stuck mostly to groomers as the bumps that I tried were still…Continue

My first tracks sank into the snow an hour earlier than normal thanks to Daylight Savings Time. And what a treat it was to catch everyone else snoozing while I was carving my way around this glorious winter resort.
The thrill of the day was swooshing my way through the Sunshine side of the mountain. Runs…Continue

Just when you think it's time to break out the spring attire, Mother Nature seems to dial it up a notch and blasts us with a healthy dose of winter. We have once again seen a week of mixed conditions. Spring and 45 degree temperatures one day, cold and snowy the next. That's March…Continue

It's snowing hard in Steamboat, and we're surfing through the clouds.
Aside from creating our own snow clouds by carving turns in the fresh snow, mother nature is making it a bit tough to see on the mountain this morning with her own cloud. You can't see very well on the open runs, but the good…Continue
