Winds of change.

The weather has been playing some very interesting tricks on us this season. Today was no exception. Windy conditions were on the menu this morning. With the Gondola on hold, I loaded the Christy Lift Express and took a few quick runs to get the blood flowing. Lower mountain is the only area currently open. Conditions are firm and hard packed, but I did manage a few adventurous runs through the Maverick Superpipe. If you haven't had a chance to check out the Bashor Bowl area, today is a…

Cruising through the end of 2011

In the last few days of 2011, it has been fun cruising the mountain on skis remembering all of the great days Steamboat has given us over the past year.   Some deep powder days and some not-so deep days, but there is no other place I would rather be.  I can never take my eyes off the amazing view we enjoy from this mountain;…

Mavericks Superpipe is Open!

A new snow system has arrived and it's snowing in Steamboat!  As I wait for the snow to accumulate, I head to one of my absolute favorite areas to ski at Steamboat - the halfpipes.  Before I head down to the pipes, I like to take a couple of warm up runs to loosen my legs.  As I headed down Vagabond, I easily carve large turns over fresh, soft snow.  I turn up my speed a notch and really warm up my…

Sunshine Peak Cruising

I like the easy pitch of Tomahawk on an overcast day because I have a tendency to go slower. The sky is plenty clear today, but without bright sunshine the texture of the snow can be harder to read. My skiing does take a more relaxed stance over here and it is fun to really try to carve the skis. The snow at the upper and steeper portion of Tomahawk is a little harder since there is some man-made snow in that area. The trade-off is that the coverage is very good over what is a big boulder…

White Out Is The Place To Be

The days are getting longer and the new year is fast approaching. What does this mean for skiing or riding? Well, it gives us more energy to ski all day, more quality day light later in the afternoon, and new year's resolutions. Whether it's going to be your 100 day season, taking up a new sport on the mountain, or just getting outside more, it all keeps you having fun outside in the fresh Yampa Valley air.

Conditions have been pretty consistent day to day this past week. The…

Skiing with Toddlers

There isn’t a better place to be with the family than Steamboat at Christmas time. While the resort has a little something for everyone, it really shines when skiing with little kids.

While the “sunnyside” is great for beginner and intermediate skiers (everything off Tomahawk, skier’s left of Sundown…

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Everyone!  It's another beautiful bluebird day in Steamboat and the skiing is fantastic. Christmas morning has been one of my favorite times to ski and I haven't missed it even once in all of the 11 years I've lived in Colorado. Admittedly, it's not a time that most can get up here early, but if you are one of the lucky few that can make it up before noon, you'll enjoy vacant slopes and fresh corduroy to your heart's content! …

Merry Morningside.

It's another picture perfect day here in the Yampa Valley. The skies are once again bluebird and the sun is shining bright. I couldn't think of a better way to spend my Christmas eve than making some early morning turns before the festivities begin. As we all know the holidays can be a crazy time of the year. Getting out, breathing in the fresh mountain air and taking in a few runs is a perfect way to start your day.…

Holiday Cheer

It's another beautiful day here in Steamboat. The Christmas crowd is here, bringing much joy and happiness to the Yampa Valley during this holiday season. I think my favorite part of this time of year is seeing all the kids learning to ski and families skiing together. There aren't to many sports in which a whole family can partake in. Steamboat caters to all abilities and provides a warm welcome to your Steamboat experience.…

A White Christmas

There is nothing better than starting the day with new snow. A quick storm moved into the Steamboat area yesterday and left behind 7 inches of fresh snow. The storm was an upslope, which meant a windy start to the day for the resort. But now we're up and running with skiers and riders out and enjoying the early holiday present.

The new snow, plus the hard work of mountain crews, has given us 1,414 acres to ski on this holiday weekend with 12 lifts and 98 trails including the Sundown…

Lightly Snowing

As we draw near the Winter Solstice and the sun gets up a tiny bit later each day, the early morning light on the mountain feels surreal. And this is especially true when it is snowing - which is just what it has been doing since around 5 this morning! I hope this is just the beginning of a great relationship between this storm and our mountain.…

Surprise with a view

After checking the forecast for today, I expected nothing but sun to greet all of the holiday skiers this morning.  But to my surprise looking out my window first thing , there was a blanket of fresh snow on the ground!  It wasn't much, but its always a treat to have even a little snow on top of those nice corduroy cruisers on the mountain.  Riding up the Gondola offered nice views of the lightly frosted trees and the storm hanging in the valley below.

3-2-1…Lift off.

There is a festive vibe on the mountain today. I’m not sure if people are more psyched about the holidays or that Sundown Express lift is now open. Personally, it felt like the shackles were taken off when I rode up and eyed all the new terrain that opened up today. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up doing a 3-2-1. I’m talking about the Clocks – Three, Two and One O’Clock.…

Inversion of the Senses

Stepping off the gondola this morning I was greeted with the most immaculate blue sky and sunshine I could ever dream.  My senses were immediately put at ease while I strapped on my sticks and prepared for a great morning of skiing Steamboat.

The snow machines were adding a fresh layer to Rudi's Run and…

Blue bird skies and smiles all around.

There was a very infectious buzz humming around the base area this morning. The holiday season is upon us and it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.  It's always a welcomed sight to see the arrival of the jets into the Yampa Valley. The base area  is alive with excited skiers, making their way to the top for their first turns of a well deserved vacation.…

Moguls and Fresh Air

It's a good day to be out on the slopes and breathing in some fresh mountain air. There was remnants of a sun dog up on the mountain this morning as I was skiing down Rudi's, which was a treat to see.

With the fresh snow we received…

Jack Frost Visits Steamboat

Steamboat received an early holiday gift from Jack Frost over last 24 hours!  Three inches of new snow softened the runs and delighted skies and snowboarders alike.  The view of Steamboat from the top of  the Four Points Lift this morning was spectacular!  Jack Frost painted sparkling snow crystals which glimmered like glitter in the sunshine!…

Still Snowing...

My favorite 5am Snow Report words, besides of course "POWDER DAY", are "STILL SNOWING." It even makes Buddy's statue smile:

Even though there may not be a lot of snow to report at five, the fact that it is still snowing tells me a couple of things. First of all, the groomers have long since finished…

Bluebird with a chance of snow

Looking out the window first thing this morning, I expected it to be a cloudy day wtih some possible snow later.  I grabbed my low light goggles and headed over to the Gondola.  To my surprise, the sun really broke out, and it has become another beautiful blue bird day in Steamboat.

My 12th Day of Appreciation

Over recent years, December has become my favorite month of the year because there is always a reason to eat, drink, and be merry, but it’s also a month that makes me feel grateful just about every single day. In my family, birthdays litter the month and we always hit the mountain to celebrate. This past weekend, my daughter turned three and all she wanted to do was go skiing, and that is something I can definitely appreciate.…
