Closing Day

Today, marks the last day in the '09/'10 season. A season that brought almost 300" of Champagne Powder to Steamboat. We had blue bird days full of soft groomers and powder days with tree skiing and face shots. What was your favorite day? I remember New Year's Eve powder turns and an incredible blue bird day in February. If you were here last week, you'll likely remember the 21" of snow in 24 hours.Continue

It's another beautiful Colorado blue sky day, and the sun is shining bright. It is so hard to believe that the ski area closes the 09/10 season tomorrow!

Every year, some things change. Like the amount of snow we get, the number of people that come to visit here and the friends that come & go. But there is one thing that never changes - how much fun we have. Steamboat is awesome because no matter what changes for us year to year, everyone seems to always have a great time.

A great start to closing weekend

It is another perfect blue bird morning here in the Boat. Not a cloud in the sky as I rode up the gondola staring out into the Flat Top mountains and in the other direction to Sand Mountain and Hahn's Peak. I can't believe the mountain closes this weekend... I am going to miss seeing these amazing views caked in Champagne Powder.

I have to admit I was surprised at the conditions this morning. I expected it to be spring conditions in need of some sunshine to get things warmed up

Blissful Spring Powder Days!

After coming off the best powder day of the season, today might not have had new snow, but what it did have was bluebird skies and powder stashes still to be searched out.

Instead of heading straight to upper mountain, I decided to see what I could find on the lower p

21" in 24 hours! I think that says it all!

I did consider making my report this morning all photos because we have so much snow - but that just wouldn't be fair!

Straight Talk Suggestions

Dear Straight Talk Readers,

I'll talk about this morning's snowboard session up on the mountain later in this post, but first wanted to ask you for any thoughts, feedback, or opinions about this past year's Straight Talk Report. As you may know we changed things up this season and moved to a blog format so we could bring you photos/videos and a way to comment directly on each day's report. So, in the spirit of making the report as fun and useful to you as possible, please consi

Winter wants more

I would like to dedicate my final Straight Talk Report of the season to Steamboat's snow maintenance crews! Thank you for keeping our slopes in shape and making each run so fun to ski and ride, you all rock! Cheers to you!

I personally thank you for this day- the next best thing to a powder day is the day after... When the soft winter fluff is sculpted into a fine white carpet for our carving pleasure. I love making smooth, flowing turns leaving a long ribbon track from top to

poWOWder

Are your fat skis put away for the season? I hope not, because today is a full on face-shot powder day at the 'boat.

It's practically been snowing here since Thursday night. There's soft smooth snow across the mountain. From Hurricane to Closets and Shadows, the snow is deep.

April is Good

I really hope you are reading this after your session making turns today at Steamboat. All warm and happy, with that sensation one can only feel after experiencing an unexpected, super-kind powder day.

Yesterday's conditions were fantastic and due to the cool

Spring Snowshine

Whoa. As a reminder that a few warm days do not a Springtime make, today we are being greeted by February-style conditions: Cool, crisp air, light snow falling and 7" of new since yesterday morning. Check out these happy folks (wisely) sporting their spring "sunscreen".

Temps and Flakes are FALLING!

Tele-Talker Amy knew what she was talking about when she said something was blowing in yesterday because today--IT'S HERE! This morning we woke up to two inches of new Spring slush. Though, by the time I was heading down the mountain to come report to the world, a new dusting of powder had already covered the slush and was continuing to fall with increased intensity! Snowbird, Utah got a foot out of this storm, and the weather-people are already… Continue

Something's Blowing In...

"In like a lamb, out like a Lion." The old adage rings true again as something closes in on Steamboat today, this last day of March!

I like to ride up Four Points first because it gives me a good idea of what's going

Tuesday in the park

When the sun comes out and the snow gets a bit slushier, I find myself lapping our terrain parks more often to work on my own progression. Even at 26 years old, I've found the park to be a really fun place for all ability levels but it also requires knowledge and progression to get there.

I headed to Christie Peak Express which has the easiest access to Steamboat's Terrain Parks. From the midway station at Christie, you can lap Lil' Rodeo Terrain Park and if you go to the top of Christ… Continue

Simply delightful!

If you are about to embark on your spring break in Steamboat you should be smiling. Even if you missed Saturday's powder (I did too) the snow here is in sweet shape for the last 14 days of the season. I think we will go out in style!

The sun is already burning off a thin layer of clouds and I think w

First Chair to Last Chair

It's one of those magical days in Steamboat. Yesterday, we received over 6 inches of snow. Today, we have blue bird skies, soft bumps and super fast groomers. It's perfect.

Vagabond was fast and soft down to the bumps of Surprise. A few quick turns down Surprise and then up to an incredible view at the top of Storm Peak. The groomed portion of the face was perfect, while the skier's left side had perfect bumps that were

And Winter is Back!

Riding up the Four Points Lift, I noticed the whiteboard at the top, the statement said it all, "SNOW! AGAIN!" What an unbelievable day up on the mountain. The snow has returned to Steamboat, and what better way to celebrate the return of our good friend, then to get out on the mountain and hit up some freshies.

My runs today were quite a bit different than the usual groomers I've been skiing the last couple of weeks. The snow just seems to bring that out in me. I started out f

You know it's going to be a good weekend when it all starts with some fresh snow. I always wake up a little easier when the snow report says there are freshies waiting and still snowing.

Fast for a Thursday

Today was what I expected from a Thursday morning in late March including one added bonus - I got to ski with some really good people. The sun was out with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature outside was great. It's only going to warm up as the day moves along, and the snow will soften.

The conditions outside kept me from venturing off the groomers, but I had a blast cruising down High Noon, One O Clock and Heavenly Daze. The runs were great. I had an amazing time linki

Spring Variety

This spring is turning out to be a season of variety - variety in ski gear, at least. We go from skiing in t-shirts to pulling out the puffy down all in the same week. The storm that blew in Tuesday brought us a short break in our bluebird skies, but the sky is clearing and should stay sunny for the next couple of days.

It's snowing in Steamboat!

In case you didn't know...it's SNOWING here in Steamboat! After some Spring weather for the last week or so (warm days, cold nights) it is a very welcome change, and I hope everyone gets to enjoy it. Only 20 more days left to ski/ride this season.

So will this add new trails or just wide open mountainside? What lift would service the area? I do agree that Steamboat is not the best mountain for beginners so anything to help add more green runs would be a great thing!
