Happy Groundhog Day!

Today is a special day for skiers and snowboarders - everyone's favorite weather forecasting groundhog is on stage!  While most of the country is usually hoping for an early spring, most people planning their Steamboat Springs vacations are wishing differently.  The verdict?  Clearly Punxsutawney Phil is a skier or snowboarder.  He did not see his shadow this morning, so legend says, we will have six more weeks of winter.  Everyone reading this blog needs to send some love to the…

Taking the 'Advice' of Others

Some days I have a plan - certain areas of the mountain that I absolutely have to ski and usually in a certain order. Today I thought it would probably be good everywhere and even though it is my job to give advice, I also think it can be good to listen to the advice of others. There are actually quite a few sources of mountain…

Snow. Snow. Snow

Why is it cheap to feed a Giraffe?

** It makes a little food go a LONG way**

After last night's exciting snow storm for a few hours, I bet most of us thought we would have had a least a foot of snow on the morning report. Nonetheless 5" on the summit was sure to be good.  I was soon to find out that 5" went a long way! Skiing is EXCELLENT today.

Rock Around the Clock

One O’Clock, Two O’Clock, Three O’Clock, Rock!  After a friendly greeting from Timbo and the other Gondola staff this morning, I head over to Sunshine Peak.  I decide to ski the “O’Clock” runs in chronological order (which is also the order of their increasing difficulty).  These runs are accessible from skier’s right on High Noon.

One O’ Clock, an intermediate run, was groomed yesterday.  My skis glide over its smooth surface and the recent snow creates a…

Still Snowing

It's another day of that early morning snow here in Steamboat.  The 5am snow report said there was only one inch of new snow on the ground, but the important part was that the skies were still snowing.  I said this last week, but I think I need to say it again...  If the early morning report says the current conditions are "Snowing", no matter how much fell from the night before, you need to get out of bed and cruise to the mountain because you are about to find some powder. It was still…

Commitment to the Velvet Under-Board

Having just spent a week in Utah (working, not skiing), I was thrilled to get back home and experience for myself the impact of the recent storms, and it was legitimately my best day on the mountain this season.

It's cold and bluebird, and with over 2 feet of snow over the past week, the skiing…

STORMS BRING OVER TWO FEET OF SNOW TO STEAMBOAT IN PAST WEEK

Special Airfares into Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® End Today; Over 8 Feet of Champagne Powder® Snow Has Fallen Since Opening Day

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-January 23, 2012-It's been a powder-filled week in Steamboat, as Mother Nature paid an extended visit to Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A. with nearly 2 feet of snow falling at Thunderhead, the…

Wake up and smell the powder!

After living here for 10 years, I have finally learned to pay close attention to the morning snow report.  Even if the 5am report says no new snow, but current conditions are "SNOWING", it is time to get out of bed and put your boots on, because it's about to be a powder day.

Today is no exception to that rule; no new snow to report first thing, but it has been snowing hard in Steamboat all morning.  Riding up the gondola you could see the next car down the line, but that was…

Winter Storm Warning!

Steamboat is under a Winter Storm Warning and a series of storms are lined up to (hopefully) dump boatloads of powder on the mountain!  The powder day on Tuesday, the couple of fresh inches that fell last night, and the potential impending powder days in the near future have pumped up the energy on the mountain!  Skiers and snowboarders are charging hard and excited about the fantastic conditions out there today!  I decided…

It's Deep. It's Bluebird. AND IT'S AWESOME!

Today is a game changer for Steamboat.

Last night dumped a foot of fresh on the mountain, bringing things back to the way Steamboat should be.

Every run offered deep turns leaving nothing but cold smoke against a bluebird Colorado sky in the wake of each passing…

More Clouds than Coffee

I tore out of the house this cloudy morning with much, much less than a full night’s sleep (thanks to baby Jett) and NO COFFEE (actually no milk, but I can’t do it black). It was a bit brutal, but I booted up and headed toward the base to grab a to-go cup from Gondola Joe’s. I could feel my attitude shift as the caffeine entered my bloodstream, and I entered the gondie car.…

Sunday Funday!

It is Sunday, a perfectly named day of the week for the bight, sunny conditions on the mountain today.  My favorite place to ski on a sunny morning is Morningside Park.  Did you know that the names of all the runs in this area are inspired by the morning (Rooster, Alarm Clock, Wake Up Call)?  The sun warms the snow in Morningside Park first, so it is an excellent area to ski first…

Lucky Friday the 13th

Typically, I don't do the Straight Talk report, but with today's (in)auspicious date, I was given the nod. Since I skied over in Sunshine Bowl yesterday, I thought I'd give the other side of the mountain a shot.

Rudi's and Lightning are as good as they've been all year. The 8” of snow we've picked up this week and a ton of great work from mountain crews have improved conditions on the mountain. Buddy's too is skiing great and Cyclone, which was groomed overnight, had really nice soft…
