Morning Meditation

Last Saturday morning I woke up to a gorgeous pink sunrise, and took that to mean that the snow gods and goddesses were about to pay Steamboat a nice little (or big I should say) visit... and boy was I right!  Thank you all for doing your very best snow dancing, it really paid off nicely in the past week.  This morning, there was no pink sunrise... but even better, there was snow!

I'm a stay-at-home Mom (and I love it), but the lost art of getting into your car (by yourself)…

Fresh snow, a Steamboat holiday tradition

Let the Steamboat holiday traditions begin. The Sugar Plum Fairy and all her adorable little angels, mice and snowflakes will dance the "Nutcracker” this weekend...but it appears that during dress rehearsal last night the Snow Queen did a fine job sprinkling both the stage and our ski area with a blanket of fresh snow.…

Holiday Bliss

In all the hustle and bustle of the holidays it's easy to be overwhelmed with everything but what's important. That may sound cliche but it is the absolute truth. I am a perfect example of what NOT to do...December 20th rolls around and undoubtedly I get the same sense of anxiety wondering if I've finished my Christmas cards which quickly turn into New Years or even Valentine's Day cards at worst. I rack my brain for ideas wondering if I've found the perfect gift for my not…

Steamboat Leftovers

All the snow that has fallen in the last 3 or 4 days has done wonders for the mountain. The ice layer is a distant memory, the groomers have all been refreshed with soft snow and the trees have been amazing. Since the big snow on Monday, the few inches we've gotten each day have kept things soft and fun out there, but we are mostly riding on the leftovers. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just different.

BUD LIGHT ROCKS THE BOAT FREE CONCERTS UNVEILED FOR 2015

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-December 17, 2014-Live music fills the mountains during Steamboat’s ski and snowboard season as the Bud Light Rocks the Boat Free Concert Series kicks off its 16th year of featuring free concerts from the hottest bands throughout the season.

“It’s hard to believe we’re celebrating more than a decade and a half of free music in Steamboat through the Bud Light Rocks the Boat shows at the Steamboat Ski Resort,” said Rob Perlman, senior vice president of…

Prevent injuries this ski season with Fit For Snow tips

So you’ve bought your pass, picked up some new gear and are stoked for the season. Now it's time to get in shape and learn how to prevent injuries.

Skiing and riding on snow are unique in the demands that gravity places on your muscles and joints. It’s one of the reasons that you always get sore…

Let's talk about the backcountry, baby

Reason No. 743 why I adore Steamboat: It doesn't take much snow to get the mountain in gorgeous shape. What a lovely relief to finally ski some real powder. And it is everywhere.

One of the fun things about this time of year is there are so few people compared to the amount of terrain that is open, so even the…

Yeehaw! Powder Stashes in New Terrain

Hiking to coveted powder stashes is a rite of passage in Steamboat. Two fresh inches atop the 19 inches over the past three days made for the perfect conditions to open new terrain, which is exactly what happened this morning.

Here is an early gift for our loyal Straight Talk readers - Hike-To Pony terrain is where it's at! The entire Pony Express area is open as of today and covered in deep, fluffy powder; however, the lift is not running yet. So, bring your legs and…

Game Changer

After many weeks of patiently waiting and quite a few snow dances, our day has come.  While Sunday was a great powder day, today really made Steamboat feel like Steamboat again.  Last night's snow storm was a game changer... welcome to winter in the Boat!

Fresh Snow

There’s nothing more gratifying in a ski town than the sound of snow falling silently from the sky.  Shhh…. do you hear that?  Ahhh… nothing.

Flakes were falling sky as I laid my first tracks into about 3 inches of fresh this morning.  Finally, after what has been an escalating anticipation of a…

Pink sky in the morning...

As they say, pink sky in the morning, sailors take warning... here, in Steamboat, it should be more like pink sky in the morning, skiers/riders start adjourning (from any obligations you may have tomorrow morning).  I woke up this morning to a gorgeous pink sunrise over Steamboat... which means, keep doing your very best snow dance all day long!  Snow is in the forecast, and I have a feeling that the weather gods and goddesses are about to grace Steamboat with their…

Short and Sweet

Every day on the mountain is different. Sure, I've had more than my fair share of groomer days this year. But the weather in the mountains is complicated and it can change everything overnight. While the conditions may change for the better or worse, nothing quite beats getting to see the morning light across the valley. Even though my day only involved one run down from the gondola (I'll get to that later), just being up there is always an invigorating way to start your…

There's no place like home

This weekend I left the valley - a somewhat rare occurrence in winter for me.  My 2 year old and I accompanied my husband on an 'adventure' to another Colorado ski resort where he had to be for work.  While it is always fun to explore and go see other places, everything about my weekend away reminded me of why I LOVE STEAMBOAT!…

Sunrise Over New Terrain

This morning, skiers and riders were greeted by a beautiful sunrise peeking over new terrain openings across the mountain.

Set your alarms early and hustle up to the mountain! The cold night temperatures are creating amazing early morning conditions on the groomed runs. Untouched soft corduroy on…

Follow the Sun

Here’s a Monday morning CHEERS to the incredible Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, the Yampa Valley Choral Society and the Steamboat Chamber Singers, who put on a heck of a beautiful Christmas Spectacular in the Strings Pavilion last

Skiing in the Clouds

Tiny snow crystals are falling from the sky and the groomed terrain on the mountain is holding up nicely. All in all, this is a great day to be on the mountain.

Heading my way down to the upper mountain lifts, Rudi’s Run was in as good of shape as anyone could hope. The surface was smooth and the… Continue

Saturday Surprise...NEW TERRAIN OPEN!!!

First day on the mountain this season, and it feels amazing!  There is always something magical, even spiritual about your first day back on your board (or skis).  Simply put, it's part of who I am, part of my Steamboat identity.  My husband, son and I traveled to North Carolina for Thanksgiving, and as we drove through epic early season snow to catch our flight from Denver, we were questioning our decision to miss out on opening day this year... and then we heard about the rain.  The rain…

Steamboat adds additional terrain: Elkhead, Sundown Express lifts to open Dec. 6

Skiers and riders will have more terrain to navigate at Steamboat Ski Resort this weekend as the resort opens Elkhead and Sundown Express chairlifts and 11 new trails across Sunshine Peak on Saturday.

“We are preparing for a wonderful holiday season in Ski Town, U.S.A., and one of the first steps in that direction is opening more terrain for skiers and riders to enjoy,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “Our mountain…

On traffic, today's dusting of freshies, and Steamboat cows.

Before we talk about skiing, here’s a little slice of genuine Steamboat off the slopes. Witness this week’s Steamboat traffic jam...

When you come to Steamboat you have all the conveniences of a modern ski area, but a good old fashioned cattle drive could still slow your progress getting around town…
