Zilch

Wow it is a nice day in Steamboat.  Not one cloud in the sky ... nada, zero, nothing, zilch.

The sun is shining bright and warm today, leaving us a little seasonally confused.  While the calendar says January, the weather says mid-March.  The temperatures are very comfortable today,…

Kids at Play

The best part of being in Steamboat with kids is the fact that there’s just so many ways to spend the day.  The way our mountain meshes western hospitality with family activities makes this the perfect resort for children.  And there’s no better way to bring out your inner child than to spend the day skiing with one or two.

I was fortunate enough this…

Go Nordic. Spread the love.

Persistent bluebird skies offer a mighty fine opportunity to switch things up and experiment with different winter sports. Near-zero temps make the heart-pumping, core-heating appeal of Nordic skiing irresistible.

For today's ski adventure, I headed out to the …

Change Is Good (So You Want to be a Skier?)

As the groomer days start to pile up and the last traces of fresh snow get packed down, I decided that it's time for a change. Since I can't change the weather, It is time to change my gear. That's right, this snowboarder is going skiing!

So first thing's first: I have skied in the past.…

How to Ski 7,136 vertical feet by 10:05

1.  Go first thing. This doesn't mean 9, or 9:15 after a leisurely breakfast. This means be in line when the gondola opens at 8:30. There is rarely a crowd in the early morning unless it is a huge powder day. Even during the holiday chaos the gondi lines were smooth…

Steamboat - There's an App for That

I have a confession to make, every morning during ski season, I wake up and immediately check the Steamboat App for how much new snow fell on the mountain. I am not alone in this. Really, this is a thing.…

Early Bird Gets The Worm

Early, late, day, night.... it's always a good time to get out for some skiing.

I looked out my window this morning to find a beautiful sunrise mixed in with some pretty solid cloud cover hoping a storm was headed our way.  Although there is no fresh snow to speak of this morning, it was…

Biking on the Snow?

So for this week’s report I figured I’d focus on a new resort experience I recently had.  Like many of our guests, I too had an interest in the new-fangled sport of snowbiking.  Knowing nothing about what to expect, I hooked up with a terrific instructor (Justin Dillie) and headed out for an adventure.…

Two Worlds

It's mind-boggling how quickly the weather can change in the Rockies.  The difference one hour or a 3,668 foot elevation gain (Steamboat's vertical rise) can make is crazy.  I woke up around 6:30am to howling winds and what appeared to be a dark, stormy cloud hovering over the mountain.  All I really wanted to do was pull the covers over my head and fall back asleep... nice, warm and cozy.  By 7:30am, as I left my house, the skies were starting to part, giving the morning sky a majestic…

Lower Mountain Fun

My knee-jerk reaction almost every time I ride the mountain is to immediately head up to the top. That's usually where the best snow is. My favorite runs are all up there. It just seems like the place to be. However, there is a sect of people around town that forego the extra lift rides and vertical.…

Go up...and Reelect Snow!

Go up. We have an inversion this morning. That means our negative temps at the bottom have more than a few plusses up top: It was at least 15 extra degrees warmer when I checked in with the Storm Peak lifties, and less skiers because those icicle-ridden trees outside their bedroom windows just looked cold.…

Be Here Now

Skiing can fix things.

We look too often to therapists, to politics, to money, to success, to luck even to 'fix' us.  And those things are great, those things can help us.  But I'm just gonna throw it out there that skiing may work just a little bit better.

I've been dragging through the…

Shades of Grey

Flat light is rarely anyone's ideal skiing condition but don't let it detour you from an incredible day on the slopes. During those snowy, winter days you will often find that the light is not quite the same as our famous, blue-bird days. Realistically though some of the best powder is prime for the taking on those grey, flat-light days.

The difficulty with flat-light is that our confidence and comfort while skiing is based mainly on our vision. Like anything, we like to see what we…

Steamboat, I Like it Here

Good morning Steamboat Springs! The classic groomers are pristine today with an inch of fresh powder, sunny skies, and comfortable temps.

Smooth

Powder, creamy soft groomers and sunshine... this week is off to a very good start.

When I left the resort yesterday afternoon, the snow was coming down steady and I knew that Monday morning would be treating us right in Steamboat.  While the morning snow report may have convinced you…
