What a beautiful morning, there is not a cloud in the sky and some new snow has graced the valley yesterday paving the way for a fabulous day to ski and ride on the hill. I had a super enjoyable morning cruising around on top of a beautiful layer of frosting. This time of year you never know what…Continue

Don't let the minimally snowing skies downtown and at the base of the mountain fool you: It's DUMPING up top! A full parking lot, no lift lines and sleeper snowfall is what I love most about Steamboat!
As I made my way up the gondola I could see the snowflakes get bigger and bigger. I headed over to Sundown Express and started down High Noon before ducking into Twilight. I was greeted with fresh tracks of at least five inches of velvety powder. The footing underneath was still soft,…Continue

Timing is everything. The dance between seasons can work as a road map to your day and by this I mean, follow the sun, and who wouldn't. The temperature is just lovely. There is a slight breeze out there but overall a very pleasant climate on the hill this morning. I strongly recommend heading up top first thing when the sun has been out the day before. The conditions were superb particulary on the North facing runs. I stuck mostly to groomers as the bumps that I tried were still…Continue

Mobile devices have now become more of a necessity than an option. We handle most of our personal, social, and even business transactions through these gadgets. Thus, making us dependent on them and even more addicted to their…Continue

My first tracks sank into the snow an hour earlier than normal thanks to Daylight Savings Time. And what a treat it was to catch everyone else snoozing while I was carving my way around this glorious winter resort.
The thrill of the day was swooshing my way through the Sunshine side of the mountain. Runs…Continue

Just when you think it's time to break out the spring attire, Mother Nature seems to dial it up a notch and blasts us with a healthy dose of winter. We have once again seen a week of mixed conditions. Spring and 45 degree temperatures one day, cold and snowy the next. That's March…Continue

It's snowing hard in Steamboat, and we're surfing through the clouds.
Aside from creating our own snow clouds by carving turns in the fresh snow, mother nature is making it a bit tough to see on the mountain this morning with her own cloud. You can't see very well on the open runs, but the good…Continue

Hello from another powder day in the Boat!
What a change in weather we have had since yesterday afternoon on the mountain. Yesterday's storm came in quick and blessed the ski area with 5" of fresh snow which almost all fell after the lifts closed on Tuesday. It was fun watching the…Continue

The first day of spring still is more than two weeks away, but spring skiing is in full swing at Steamboat Resort.
I ended my day Monday by catching last chair and skiing some very slushy lower mountain runs, so I was curious about early-morning conditions Tuesday during the spring freeze-thaw cycle.Continue

I was super curious heading out on the mountain today. Given the warmer temperatures that we have been seeing lately, you never know what the conditions will be like first thing in the morning. Well, I had nothing to worry about. Whatever Spring is trying to…Continue

This morning's blue skies are incredible, just incredible. What a glorious day to be up on the mountain enjoying the thrill that comes from skiing and riding our National Forest.
As I explored the snow today, I found that the groomed trails were nicely set up for some controlled speed. Last night's…Continue

Powder up top!
March is definitely living up to it's reputation. Winter up top, spring down below. It's a tale of two mountains this morning. The winds have picked up and most of upper mountain is on a weather hold. All that said, there is one thing for sure that is a positive. The skiing is fantastic this…Continue

You know, being a Straight Talk Reporter is not all riches, fame, and glory.
Sure, we get to wear the latest in fashionable ski uniforms (or at least they were fashionable in 1993). Yes, we get to ski the mountain a lot (or more like we have to ski the mountain a lot, no matter how cold and…Continue

There's a carnival atmosphere in Steamboat as we kick off Mardi Gras week with sunny blue skies and comfortable temperatures. This morning the snow was FAST, especially at the top of the mountain. I couldn't help but smile as I zipped across the corduroy on Rudi's Run. The freshly-pressed cord made turning my carving skis easy and so much fun. …Continue

At times like this, with warm sunny days and cold and clear nights, the early bird doesn't catch the worm, the late bird does.
At 8:30am, most of the mountain is still bathed in shadows and skiers will find relatively hard and crunchy conditions, even on groomed runs. However, once that sun rises above…Continue

Good morning from another spring-like day in Steamboat! Although, I'm happy to report that there were flakes flying through the air as I made my way up Storm Peak Express! Even thought the forecast isn't calling for much, we'll take anything we can get at this point. Yes, we're spoiled here in Steamboat, but that's why we live here after all!…Continue
The skiing is excellent up top today. With February coming to a close this week, I am still enjoying every day of skiing that I can get. Today is a little brisk, lighting is a little flat and the terrain is a little less crowded than I have seen recently. I would plan on a light lens in your goggles and maybe a face mask for protection against the winds up high but prepare for a nice day of carving out there. The groomers are surprisingly soft and so were the bumps. I was quite pleased…Continue
