Dancing on the Clouds

Stepping off the gondola today was surreal.  The morning light was breaking its way through the quickly sweeping clouds which provided some jaw dropping effects in the sky.  My head felt almost dizzy with the swirling of the puffy fluff above.  It was too amazing to properly describe with words and just about the coolest feeling I’ve experienced in quite some time.…

Snowflakes...

Snowflakes that fall on my nose and my goggles... these are a few of my favorite things!  That's right, snowflakes are currently falling on the slopes in Steamboat... yee-haw!

I awoke this morning to a beautiful sight.  I couldn't see the mountain, I couldn't really see much of anything, and it was beautiful!  When I arrived at the base, I could hear the muffled sound of the train chugging through the Yampa Valley... that magically muffled sound you hear only when the air is…

Why You Should Care About Burgess Creek

I'm guilty. I've treated  the Burgess Creek Lift, "the BC Lift," and the runs off it like an escalator. I took a different approach to it today and it changed my view.

The area around the BC Lift is true mid-mountain terrain, often overlooked by those focused on getting to the top or the front side of the…

Night Moves

Whether you just got into town after the lifts closed, you worked all day or you just don't get out of bed until 3, night skiing can be your only option sometimes.

I am lucky enough to be able to ski in the daytime most days, but this warm weather got me thinking about what it's like up there after…

Do Your Dance

Will winter return to our spring like valley?  My garden seems to think it's spring, the birds do, the skies definitely have been springlike, and the soft slushy skiing of the past few afternoons is highly reminiscent of, gosh, April??

The gorgeous blue skies and mild temps have been lovely but…

Ski like a yogi

Last night, I looked out at a million brilliant stars in Steamboat's dark sky and chanted a universal message to the galaxy: OM SNOW. This morning, while the East continues to be thrashed by a blizzard, it’s another sunny day here in the ‘boat.

But you know what? I see a snowflake on my iPhone…

Zilch

Wow it is a nice day in Steamboat.  Not one cloud in the sky ... nada, zero, nothing, zilch.

The sun is shining bright and warm today, leaving us a little seasonally confused.  While the calendar says January, the weather says mid-March.  The temperatures are very comfortable today,…

Kids at Play

The best part of being in Steamboat with kids is the fact that there’s just so many ways to spend the day.  The way our mountain meshes western hospitality with family activities makes this the perfect resort for children.  And there’s no better way to bring out your inner child than to spend the day skiing with one or two.

I was fortunate enough this…

Go Nordic. Spread the love.

Persistent bluebird skies offer a mighty fine opportunity to switch things up and experiment with different winter sports. Near-zero temps make the heart-pumping, core-heating appeal of Nordic skiing irresistible.

For today's ski adventure, I headed out to the …

Change Is Good (So You Want to be a Skier?)

As the groomer days start to pile up and the last traces of fresh snow get packed down, I decided that it's time for a change. Since I can't change the weather, It is time to change my gear. That's right, this snowboarder is going skiing!

So first thing's first: I have skied in the past.…

How to Ski 7,136 vertical feet by 10:05

1.  Go first thing. This doesn't mean 9, or 9:15 after a leisurely breakfast. This means be in line when the gondola opens at 8:30. There is rarely a crowd in the early morning unless it is a huge powder day. Even during the holiday chaos the gondi lines were smooth…

Steamboat - There's an App for That

I have a confession to make, every morning during ski season, I wake up and immediately check the Steamboat App for how much new snow fell on the mountain. I am not alone in this. Really, this is a thing.…

Early Bird Gets The Worm

Early, late, day, night.... it's always a good time to get out for some skiing.

I looked out my window this morning to find a beautiful sunrise mixed in with some pretty solid cloud cover hoping a storm was headed our way.  Although there is no fresh snow to speak of this morning, it was…

Biking on the Snow?

So for this week’s report I figured I’d focus on a new resort experience I recently had.  Like many of our guests, I too had an interest in the new-fangled sport of snowbiking.  Knowing nothing about what to expect, I hooked up with a terrific instructor (Justin Dillie) and headed out for an adventure.…

Two Worlds

It's mind-boggling how quickly the weather can change in the Rockies.  The difference one hour or a 3,668 foot elevation gain (Steamboat's vertical rise) can make is crazy.  I woke up around 6:30am to howling winds and what appeared to be a dark, stormy cloud hovering over the mountain.  All I really wanted to do was pull the covers over my head and fall back asleep... nice, warm and cozy.  By 7:30am, as I left my house, the skies were starting to part, giving the morning sky a majestic…
