My wife and I will be there this week. She is a lower intermediate and I know I will need some time skiing faster and I'd like to do some tree skiing and maybe hike to St. Pats and/or East Face but I don't want to do it alone. Give me a shout and ...

While I don't have confirmation yet, it appears that I will be there that week, also. A meet an lunch or after skiing would be great.

I will be there with my new ski club February 6th through the 13th. I pretty much like to ski the whole mountain except the super tough stuff. My favorite run on the lower part of the mountain is Heavenly Daze to Lower Valley View then down to th...

I doubt it would happen. Just wondering, what would be a GS run at Steamboat? Storm Peak to Cyclone, to Drop Out? I'm not sure if that's long enough.

Hi all,

Four things I like doing for lotsa fun (in order): Flying, Skiing, Volleyball, and riding my Honda Silver Wing. Click here to see my Google Picasa album for some pictures of my passions.

My first trip to Steamboat was in 1981. I was 21 and fell in love with Steamboat. I have been to other ski areas in the Colorado, Utah, and Montana. Since 1999, I have been back to Steamboat 7 times, and since 2003, Steamboat has been the only mountain ski area I have been to. I like direct flights from Chicago to Hayden, many ski in/out choices, variety of terrain, and of course the powder. I visit every year the first or second week of February. I used to bring my kids (now late teens and early 20's) and now my sister comes with. She lives in Virginia and enjoys her "snow fix" in Steamboat. She doesn't ski, but loves to shop and just absorb the Steamboat atmosphere. I hope to meet up with some of y'all when I visit this year!

edit; My teen daughter has decided to spend 5 days with her father. I just added her to the trip! It will be time spent at Steamboat, so that will be a great equalizer! Another reason to love Steamboat!

We've got at least two things in common: Steamboat and Honda. I had one of the new 1800cc Goldwings when they first came out (bright yellow). Lived near the intersection of GA/TN/NC so I put 13k miles on it in one year just loops thru the mtns. Honda makes one smooth bike. My wife/I came to Steamboat once in '99 on a "move to the mtns recon trip" and when we finished w/our looking about 6 years later (we visited a lot of ski towns) this is where we decided to move. Our third winter here is just starting and the roots are a'growin.

Just noticed you're in Crystal Lake... I just went to The Mighty Wilmot :) on 12.03.08 for a tune up. Needed to test my new gear and needed some relief from the anticipation. It was just about worth the 1 hour ride.

You been to Granite Peak? We like it there for a two nighter.

Enjoy the season

I prefer Cascade over Chestnut. I got a few free mid week tickets to Devils Head from the ski show in Schaumburg.. so I'll be heading up there this season for a daytrip or two. Any Devils Head advice?

My current ride is a Suzuki 650 track bike; standard riding position. I'd be just as happy w/a 250cc Enduro given how short my rides are and how close I am to lots of motorcycle-friendly trails. It seems to me that how/where you're going to ride tells you what's the best bike. Have heard of people regularly riding 1k (Georgia<<-->>Indiana) miles on a Silver Wing w/no complaints. The thing I always kept in mind with my Gold Wing was where I was going to land; most people call it coming to a stop, but with over 1,000 pounds to keep balanced, seeing where my feet were going to land was crucial.

Thanks, It's a Nikon D60 with an 18-200mm Nikkor lens, with a polarizing filter. It's my first time to shoot in the snow. The change in lighting when the sun went behind the clouds was pretty challenging...

I much prefer to be closer to the base area and hotel room rather than a condo. However as things change we will adapt and overcome no doubt. That said, They do need to be aware of the potential numbers increase as properties being built open up.

yea, I can tell you from experience that taking an SLR on the slopes is a big pain. I've got a smaller Lowepro backpack that works pretty well, but to take a picture it's:
take off the gloves, stick the poles in the snow, take the camera out of the backpack, then reverse the process before you're skiing again. My brother had a small video camera that would fit in his pocket and it was nothing for him to get it out and shoot some video then put it back...

You do brilliant speaking with pictures - stunning. You and Mike (skipompey) are my favourite photographers on the forum. Am glad that you took your good camera too. You will have some things to REALLY treasure when you get home again. You do get some lovely views in Steamboat.

I think that I am probably quite a nut doing all of the blogging that I did, but I loved sharing :-)

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
