No real difference on the Mountain that I can see in the many seasons I have been skiing the 'boat. As Trudeska says, the only real "problem" is the base area does get very congested. One needs to arrive early if one wishes a good view of the Cow...

I will let those more knowledgeable about the specific program comment on it but if you can ski the East with its ice, rain, hardpack, boilerplate, etc, you can definitely ski Steamboat (or anywhere else for that matter) as long as you stay on run...

Quite reasonable policy and one I agree with 100%. Cheers

Sounds like it is mandatory only in the terrain park and for kids and teens but optional elsewhere and adults. I guess they plan card checks in the lift lines and on the hill? ;) My interpretation is helmets required for lessons and in the Pipe a...

There is an old saying, Boarding is hard to learn and easy to master while skiing is easy to learn and hard to master. If this is your first time to ride, I would go for the lessons all three days. Once you get the feel and have recovered from var...

Sounds like the price is a good deal, including the Shuttle to/from the airport. I would probably choose the Highmark for location, close to the free bus stop, etc. unless ski in/out is a "must have". Even with their very checkered past it is prob...

I highly recommend it! I have enjoyed super days and friends who have skied with them have also had a great time. They have different levels of skiing ability groups so you can feel assured you will not get in over your head ability wise. Powder l...

Another year in the book

Unfortunately, I had to cut this season short due to some issues back in our Ohio home so I left Sunday before the snow came back to town. Still, 50+ days this year, while a little short to the normal 50-75 days on the hill should last me until next January.

While this year was not as epic as last year, Jan and Feb had plenty of good days before the erratic weather patterns arrived. The swings between winter and spring skiing all the way up to the day I left Sunday, 22 March was certainly diffe… Continue

A day with the O.T.H.G.

Today as on many others, I skied with the Over The Hill Gang, a free service offered Sunday to Friday for skiers 50+ . This service offers a guided ski along program from 0900 until your legs give out.

As the regular plan, the OTHG met near the Covered Wagon at the Gondola Base @ 0900 and then boarded the Gondola. Those who have not skied with the Gang before need to sign a wavier of responsibility at the ski school desk at the top of the Gondy and attend to whatever else one needs to do before… Continue

January is back!

After a couple of days with heavy water content snow and some cloudy days, January returned with a few inches of fresh dry powder and temperatures of below zero, both top and bottom. No inversion today as the clouds hung around overnight so it was definitely colder up top than at the base. I was beginning to think I had been transported to the Sierras and Lake Tahoe with the previous recent snow conditions but today was more Steamboat like. :-)

After riding the Gondola up to -3 F country, I too… Continue

Blue Birds and Cowboys

Another Blue Bird day accompanied by another pretty good temperature inversion. -2 at the Condo and +24 at Thunderhead. Makes for some interesting planning for gear. I usually plan for the top conditions and just hurry from the car to the Gondy. Saw lots of folks that were wondering what to do with all the heavy jackets, etc after reaching the unload station. Just a tip, check the Pressing Glass report for the Mountain temp before gearing up. It always shows the Thunderhead Temperature.

After m… Continue

Another Blue Bird Day But...........

I know I said I would not be blogging frequently but this day deserves it. Woke to a temperature Inversion and some fog in the Valley, 4 at the House while it was 24 at Thunderhead. Burned off quickly and the high clouds vanished as well by 0930.

This being MLK weekend, the Base was crowded for Steamboat, 10 minutes in the singles line and full mazes for both the Gondy and Christy Express. After exiting and heading to Rudy's, the bad juju hit me. I was making it easy down Rudy's because of the… Continue

Started to spend the winters in Steamboat back in Jan 1997 and have been back every winter since then. Stay from 15 Jan to the end of the season every year.

Cheers

Hi Skisteamboat. A bit of short notice, but some of us are trying to get together this afternoon (4.30pm) at Slopeside Grill. I just noticed that you were in town (from your blog). Boo

Great! (and thanks for the claririfcation before I had a chance to reach for my "American to English" translation dictionary - for "swater" ;-) ).

Hopefully you know what I look like. But will PM you with a complete give-away...

Arrrgghhhh! We missed you! I knew that I should have worked out some way for you to recognise us...

If you walked in from the slope side of Slopeside, then we were the table of about 10 in the far right-hand corner. My husband is very disintictive, I should have said and you would have found us (not many Chinese people in Slopeside this afternoon...)

Unfortunately we are meeting some people to ski tomorrow mid-morning, so wont get over there in time :-(

We leave pretty early tomorrow, so I think that things will be manic from now on. Will definitely keep an eye out for you today. keep an eye out for us too - I think that we are pretty recognisable (especially with ski jackets, helmets and goggles on).

Am glad that you still enjoyed Slopeside, but very sad that we missed you: it would have been fun and you could have put quite a few faces to names on here. Boo

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
