It's still just about Balance

This summer I spent 7 days working up at Mt Hood with PSIA-NW and Snow Performance Race Camps. Great weather, good firm snow in the morning and corn by mid morning. As usual we loaded the chair around 6:30, started teaching around 8 and came off hill around 1...leaving plenty of time for a sail or a round of golf. Both camps I would car pool up with either Tyler Barns of the PSIA-NW Technical Team or Chris Kastner former PSIA national demo team member. The time on the hill and in the car talking… Continue

Best Winter Ever

On Feb 18th at 3 AM, Lily Kay Wingard joined the population of Steamboat. She is a very healthy and happy baby. She is our first child and now I understand. All those people who told me what to expect or how I would feel, I never could understand until now. Easily the coolest thing ever.

Move with the ski

I went out the other day on a Snowboard, which I haven't done in way too long. Man, that's fun. And my skiing improved because of it. It's all about moving with the tool, staying centered and shaping the turn.

The first few turns on the SB I was so concerned with slowing down that I just pushed my back foot around and slid around the corner. The board would pivot, slide, then as pressure built up chatter and bounce over the snow. The latter half of the turn was very unpleasant and I couldn't wa… Continue

A great video clip

A good friend of mine sent me this link. Great image of skiing.

A couple of notes.
1. The drill where Noel has his poles across his body, he is not focused on keeping them down the hill, but rather level to terrain. This is to maintain body orientation that keeps pressure and movement directed towards the outside ski. The rotary element is less focused on counter and more upon moving with the ski.

2. When talking about pres… Continue

Early Season Tune Up Tips

Starting the season right is the key to a long season of fun on the mountain. Getting your feet dialed in so you can balance on top of your skis or board makes for much easier skiing or riding.

Here are a couple of thoughts that I use to get my center.
1. Simple sport. Keep your body over your base of support.
2. Balancing on the side of the ski is what makes them carve and hold, if I push or try to edge hard, the ski breaks loose and chatters.
3. Explore a range of movements. Modern skiing all… Continue

I still ski at Crystal Mountain. I taught for the area ski school on weekdays in the 70's until I started working at real jobs. When were you there? I was on the volunteer ski patrol on weekends from '65 until 2000. We have been coming for a week or two in Steamboat since about 1984 when our son moved there to train with the Steamboat Winter Sports Club.

I guess we didn't teach at Crystal at the same time, but I was there on weekends while you were there. You may have seen my husband training with the CMAC masters class on C7.
We fell in love with Steamboat in 1984 when our son, Tim, moved there. I can see why you like it. We have always had a good time in Steamboat.
We even signed up for a week of lessons about 1987. We were only people in the class that weren't locals. We had a great time with the instructor and the people in the class and actually learned a lot.
We wll be in Steamboat January 24 through 31. Maybe we can take a run with you.

Nelson, I'm coming to Steamboat in Feb, have booked the kids into Ski School, myself too. As well as s ome time with Laura Sjoblom. Anyway that's a long an rambling intro to hopefully an easy question. I am hoping to come back to Colorado in April (Easter), and Steamboat closes to early to make it really viable. I noticed you've skied in Vail an believe it has a longer season. Is it worth considering or would you recommend any other locations?

I accidentally clicked on your message to Mark Dittenber. If the Laura you refer to is Laura Sjoblom, I can top Mark in praise of her "quality" any day. This will be our 5th year with Laura. If that Laura isn't my Laura then count me as an accidental snoop. I pumped her up so much on the old forum that I got beat out by somebody else booking her on some days that I wanted! This year, no chance I booked her solid in September. She's one of my favorite people of all time.

Nelson, I plan to stop by the ski and snowboard school office next week to say hello as you suggested. When would be a good time to catch you there.
I arrive Saturday afternoon and leave the next Saturday morning.

Thank you so much for your assistance with ski school arrangements this year. Drew ruled for my kids once again. They even had 2 other returning friends there on the unofficial "Ski Week". I can honestly say that Drew is one of the reasons we return each year. Laura Sjoblom and Abi Slingsby are the other 2 reasons. Everyone in your organization was super helpful during my entire stay. Thanks again.

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
