From the vantage point, I'm not sure that the phtog was in a position to act as safety, but there is always safety set there. Probably that day it was my husband -- he is a swiftwater resuce instructor and nothing makes him happer than a good throw at that particular spot. He has reeled in lots of paddlers there! Luckily, that day I didn't give him a chance.

- Stern squirt was purely unplanned, but made for a good pic. Cleveland, Chat? Wow, 35 min. from the Ocoee. Not a bad place for a paddler to live! I've spent lots of time on the Nantahala and the Ocoee. (I'm on a first name basis with some of the fish in the Ocoee). We usually make a pilgramage "out east" over Memorial Day and spend most of the time on the Ocoee. By the way, I've met several folks in Steamboat that either currently, or have, spent their summers guiding on the Ocoee.

skiwoods said… - Hi James. I have never had a motorcycle and last year I started getting the itch for one. I thought I would get a Gold Wing or a Honda STC 1300 or 1100. When I started shopping around, I had experts telling me that I should not start out on such a big bike. Then I stumbled across a Honda Silver Wing, which is actually a scooter. My first thought was, no way am I going to get a scooter. Then I rode one. First, it's 600cc engine will keep up with most anything. it gets about 58 mpg, and is easy to ride. I will eventually get a Gold Wing, but I will always keep my Silver Wing to ride around town for errands. I envy you making the jump to Steamboat. I would like to do the same thing in about 10 years or so. I have never been there in the other seasons and I'm sure it's a spectacular place to call home.

- It's fun to watch the good ones at Hell Hole and at C-Hole. C-Hole was romping when I was there in June. (Great water year on the Yampa -- we saw a 14 foot raft trying to surf C-Hole do a complete end over end flip, sending swimmers everywhere and landing upright). Being old and stuff I don't play much. My line at Hell Hole is avoidance -- river left eddy, then ferry below for Powerhouse ledge. Even at big levels, C-Hole is nicely punchable near the river right bank. I've played there a bit (if you could call my tentative surfing/spin attempts real play moves) at it at lower levels, but at the levels this summer, I just couldn't get up the nerve. D-Hole would've been fun, but no eddy service at those levels.

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...

We skied a couple of years ago at Christmas and it was very cold. Usually we go in March. Thermals are a definite, if it's really cold I'll make the children wear a long sle...
