I saw this same article too JB and was also worried. I've been to steamboat before I love it that everyone I know heads for Vail etc in the States, and as you say, France etc. I'm going THIS December, how was your trip in February - hopefully our...

Day 3 - A mix

So it's the weekend and much to everyones surprise, not as busy as expected.

It ended up with just two of us in my last lesson before my privates, so almost a private for group rates. The weather was a mix, started off with some clouds threatening to either group or clear off.

We started off with Why Not and Rudi's run. Just as a warm up. Did a couple more before hitting Cyclone, our first black of the day.

I guess I'm now a level 6 skier.

Lunch was at the Thunderhead, which was packed. But… Continue

Day 2 - The Boat delivers again

Awoke to snow, the Boat was set to deliver once again and by the end of the day i was not disappointed.

Breakfast was a bit of a rush as I didn't want a repeat of yesterdays telling so we were all ready. It feels so much better to ski in your own clean clothes rather than day and a half old ones. I apologised to the rest of my class in case I was a bit ripe yesterday and they rather kindly said they didn't notice, I'm not sure if they meant it or had assumed I always smelled like that.

So the… Continue

Day 1 - It all adds to the excitement

Pretty sleepless night worrying about how to organise eerything and sort out the kids, so up and out early this morning. Organised ski and boot deliveryand they did ski pants which was a blessing, sorted ski school for myself and the kids, then went and bought gloves x3, and some tops for the kids, I skied in what I'd travelled in, by that time I couldn't smell it, don't know about anyone else. We'd all worn our jackets and I'd put the goggles in carry on.

The we hit the slopes, and to be hones… Continue

Day 0 - Still on UK time thank goodness for coffee!

So here we are at Steamboat, eventually. The flight to Chicago was ok until the last hour or so, when the pilot hit every bump on the way down. The flight ot Denver was good, which made up for it a bit. Ground transfer from Denver to the boat courtesy of Alpine Taxis was nice, the driver must have the eyes of a hawk or he was guessing at the animals out there, though there were a couple of groups of disgruntled Elk standing around. Rabbit Ears had been closed due to snow, but was open by the tim… Continue

Hi John, So I just checked our schedules, and I am available for both the 16th and the 18th, but Fredrik is only available the 18th. He has some long-time clients coming in to town that week and is skiing with them the other days. What would you like to do?
Where are you from in the UK?

HI! I'm easily confused, too, so we'll be a good match! :) So, I just checked my schedule and I am currently available for the 15th and 17th, however Fredrik is not. The 18th is his only day free that week. I would love to ski with you and help you reach your level 7 - or 8! - goal! Just let me know what you'd like to do. How old are your kids? I've got a 2yr. old and a 4 yr. old. What a handful! But it's a lot of fun! I'm sure you know that.
I was in Belfast when I was about 10. London, too. Then I lived in London for the summer of '94. That was a crazy summer for sure. Good times, though.
Alrighty, I guess it's my bedtime. G'night.

I taught at Vail for one season. It's a great hill. They are open for longer than Steamboat most seasons. I'm not sure of their schedule this season, however, if we are closed I can honestly say Vail is a good choice. Copper and Winter Park are also nice areas. If you are interested in still skiing with our staff we have an agreement with Vail, WP and Copper that their staff can come work here and ours there. Just contact us and we'll set it up for you.

Hope this helps.

JB, you can either drive yourself up or catch an Alpine Taxi approx $70:00 PP I think, the journey time is about three and half hours, if you do decide to drive, car hire this side of the pond as direct hire at Denver International is more money, we always book a 4X4 and stay this side of Denver on arrival and finish the drive up the next day, mainly because we usually arrive early/late evening and its abit of a drive to do at night especially if the weather is bad.
Most Forum members will say that you do not need transport at Steamboat and I would not argue that, it just the convenience and we usually drop into Denver to shop as well, no doubt someone on the forum will send you exact costings and tel number for Alpine Taxis as I have seen a similar thread before.

Hi JB. I just got on this steamboat site yesterday after reading about a guy predicting a snow storm. I sure hope he is right. you are in the UK? And plan to ski here in the US soon? Have you done so before? Sorry for all the questions. I leave Wednesday for Steamboat. Never skied there before and not at all in 12 or 13 years, I forget when I last skied. I am hapyp to be going again though, I can tell you that! Pam

Did you decide on a method of transportation up to Steamboat

Got back from Steamboat last night. I enjoyed the trip. While there it was unseasonably warm on the mountain, but the day we left it had turned much colder, 12 in town, so probably the snow was great on the mountain. It did snow about 21 inches or more while we were there and up higher on the m ountain the snow was really nice, but the lower trails got a bit icy, and the base was melting slush...my first trip there and first time to ski in around 12 years, so glad I went. The airport shuttle service was good, and the town free bus transportation was good. Wish lift tickets were not so expensive and there were not so many little kids on the mountain. I am a smaller ski area kinda person normally. I had a great time though and would like to ski there again someday.

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
