First let me say that we have never had rain at Steamboat in the 25+ years we have been coming there, but we always come in January.
I taught many years in Washington state at a ski area at 3000 feet, and we sometimes had rain when we had to be t...
It would be nice if people would always include a list of places that were videoed with the videos.
I like to try to figure out the places, but it would be nice to see if I am right.
The grooming report on the web was exactly the same this morning as it was yesterday. That is the first time I saw that. I wonder if they forgot to update it.
You are correct. If you look at the table for "Top Bump Runs" they just divide the vertical drop by the length to get the percent grade. I assume they did the same for the "Steepest Trails" table which doesn't show the vertical and length.
I woul...
The grooming report is available on the Steamboat.com website on http://www.steamboat.com/trailsAndLifts.html
According to the website they groom 8 or 9 black runs almost every night and then they groom 3 or 4 additional blacks.
They typically gro...
I was hired in Dec of 88 by Bruce Ware. For the following 17 seasons I worked there as a race grunt on C-7, instructor, supervisor and manager. During the three season season I moved to Vail for a couple months, fell in love with Steamboat and moved here the following season.
Well Jan, it looks like we will just miss each other this year. We were originally booked the same week as you, but someone in the group had a conflict, and we all moved to 31 Jan - 7 Feb. What time are you leaving on the 31st?
And, you missed a great Slopeside meet with Boo Boo, Trudeska, Kent and several others last Friday (16th).
Have fun, and maybe our dates will match next year.
I thought about coming up early and meeting you at the airport, but your departure time would have had me leaving Denver in middle of the Saturday morning rush. I watch the news around 8 AM that day, and an accident had I-70 looking like a long, narrow parking lot,so I probably wouldn't have made it anyway.
Hope you had a great week. I am easing back in to skiing; my balance is still not back where I want it, but I am out on the hill. Nothing harder than Flintlock yet, but we will see how the week progresses.
Hopefully next year our weeks will be back in phase.
Rick

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.
Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.
I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
