Powder and More Powder
It’s a good one in Steamboat. Mother Nature delivered last night. For the first time this season, I fired up the snowblower at 6 a.m. and cleared off a good 6+ inches of white stuff. It was snowing the whole time, and it’s still snowing now. Looks like I’ll be blowing the driveway again later today.
The skiing is fantastic. We took first lines down Rudi’s Run to Lighting and then a ride up Burgess Creek lift. The snow was smooth, light but not too light. An easy 8+ inches all the way down. B.C. Lift Line looked too good to pass up, so we ripped tight turns down skier’s left to find face shots all the way. I was completely surprised by the coverage. It felt bottomless.
Skiers and riders were so excited to have our first true powder day. There were smiles accompanied by hoots and hollers all over the mountain. The Four Points lift took us up to Twister, where we found at least a foot of soft snow untouched and absolutely perfect. It felt so good to be back on powder snow. From the first pitch of Twister, we skied fast over to Hurricane and ripped tight, soft, untouched bump lines down skier’s left — so good. Another quick ride up Four Points, where we decided to take a ride down Rainbow. It had been groomed last night, so the turns were smooth and easy on a pillow of white. This was the intermediate skiers place to be.
If you’re reading our blog, you’re interested in skiing. It’s our job to give you the inside scoop on what’s really happening in Steamboat, so I’m going to share a few secrets that the locals typically keep quiet.
• On a powder day get a First Tracks ticket. It’s totally worth it. You’ll get three, if not four runs in before everyone else gets on the hill and you jump to the front of the gondola line.
• If you’re not doing First Tracks, get here by 8 a.m. Grab a breakfast burrito and coffee at Gondola Joe’s and stand in line for the gondi. You’ll be one of the first up, and others in line will be jealous of your tasty breakfast.
• My last secret of the day, and it’s a good one: Four Points lift runs before Storm Peak Express, so grab a run there first. Most skiers go straight to Storm Peak and wait. They might get first tracks up top, but you’ll be skiing freshies while they watch the snow pile up.
Have an amazing holiday with your friends and family. If you’re not here, get here! It’s going to snow all day today, and tomorrow could be another powder morning. And it looks like Santa is bringing snow in his sleigh for Christmas morning.
